Hubbie wants to TTC but we went to a zika risk country in july - I don't think I'm being stupid in wanting to wait 6 months. He thinks its fine as we didn't catch but ive read so much that you can carry the virus for up to 6 months without showing symptoms.

Hoping someone can tell me I'm not being crazy!

You're not crazy and the risks to any child conceived in the next few months are not worth it IMO.

I think you can get private testing done to give you the all clear, but I'm not 100% certain.

You could use this time to come off the pill and use condoms though to regulate your cycle if that's required.

Did either of you get bitten? Not everyone develops symptoms so I wouldn’t rely on that if you did get bitten.

Slightly different situation as my DH had just come back from a zika area when I got pregnant (accidentally!). All drs have been very relaxed as it was just DH not me who was there and we’re pretty sure he didn’t get any bites. It also matters specifically where and what level of risk for that particular country - ours was Jamaica which is moderate risk and no active outbreak there. If it’s a high risk country I’d definitely be more cautious!

I suppose you need to think about the worst case and how you’d feel? If you’re young and healthy and don’t foresee a problem getting pregnant then 6 months isn’t that long to wait in the grand scheme of things?

dani2415 · 24/08/2018 09:54

Thanks for your message definitely reassuring me i'm doing the right thing waiting the 6 months.

We went to Cape Verde which was low risk when we went but moderate risk when we returned and both got badly bitten which made me panic and stop trying for now i'm 27 so 6 months seems okay to wait if it means a healthy baby!

I was literally asking the sonographer at my 12 week scan on Monday so this advice should be up to date - if you got bitten DEFINITELY wait the 6 months. Not everyone who contracts Zika gets symptoms so you don’t know if you contracted it or not!

dani2415 · 24/08/2018 10:04

Perfect thanks!

So frustrating but i guess was our choice to go so will wait not so patiently ha! :)

I found out I was pregnant in a zoos country we paid for private tests to ensure all is ok however the best time to test is soon after your return. If you want to ttc before the six months then speak to someone but if your happy to wait then that's best

mrs2468 · 24/08/2018 10:06

Zika country Smileauto correct

dani2415 · 24/08/2018 10:13

I had blood tests done which showed no sign of infection but i didnt have the specific ZIka one as my doctor said it was expensive for the NHS. Ive just changed jobs too so i guess its meant to be for me to wait the months now as its only really another 4.5 months now!

I think we paid roughly £600 for the tests privately. When I mentioned my worry to the midwife and my gp it was like they didn't know what I was talking about. The chances are slim that you have it but best be safe that sorry.

dani2415 · 24/08/2018 11:04

Definitly!

How strange i feel the same that the doctors just brushed it all of and i went in twice to raise my concern and they just said id be fine which i found very odd.

From reading up on this I found most people advise waiting 6 months if you showed symptoms of the zika virus but only 8 weeks after visiting a zika risk country if you showed no symptoms of contracting the virus. I suppose if paying for a test is within your means then it may be worth it for peace of mind if you didn’t want to wait the full 6 months.

dani2415 · 24/08/2018 12:51

Thankyou! Its so weird as I was ill after but I think that was sun stroke but you just never know! Going to wait to be 100% sure xx

@TruffleShuffles it's 6 months if your male females are the 8 weeks.

dani2415 · 24/08/2018 15:25

Even If my husband got bitten?

OP posts:
JazzAndCat · 24/08/2018 15:27

You can both pay privately to get tested. I had to get tested as I got pregnant in a zika country. It was worth it for peace of mind.

JazzAndCat · 24/08/2018 15:27

Because it is sexually transmitted you would need to wait the full six months, otherwise your husband could pass it to you.

JazzAndCat · 24/08/2018 15:29

If I were in your shoes I would probably wait too. Good luck x

surreygirl1987 · 24/08/2018 15:54

I'd wait for peace of mind... otherwise you might worry the whole time. I think youre ssupposed to wear protection for 6 months too when you get home??

Chester1980 · 24/08/2018 16:05

Best to wait.

Me and hubby were in s moderate zika country and both got bitten. Fell pregnant just after getting back.

Got a 30 week scan on Monday to check for microcephally as a result of zika. It’s actually quite late in the pregnancy they can check. No blood tests offered early in the pregnancy. They said we’d have to wait until the growth scan to be able to tell.

That said. Midwives and doctors have said it’s v low risk even in a moderate risk country.
