EPU? Specifically Addenbrookes?

I'm 5 weeks today. Had a positive of test on day 31 and 33. Getting some red bleeding since yesterday lunch time. On and off. Also some diarrhoea (sorry, TMI!!)

Called Addenbrookes EPU and they basically said there's nothing they can do but at what point would I be offered a scan to check everything's ok? I've not got my booking in appointment until 8 weeks which is a while away yet.

TIA

I had bleeding at 4+4 and went to A&E on the advice of 111 as my EPU was closed as it was a Saturday.

I had to have two blood tests 48 hours apart to check my hcg levels had risen, but wasn’t offered an early scan at all. I’m now 9 weeks, hopefully but still haven’t seen anybody beyond the blood tests.

From what I’ve seen on here, early bleeding (even if red) with no pain or clots often seems to just be given a ‘wait and see’ approach.

They can’t actually see anything on a scan until your hcg levels are over a certain amount (1000?), which is probably part of the reason they’re not routinely offered unless there’s suspicion of an ectopic.

It’s really horrible and stressful, and my experience with the hospital wasn’t brilliant (nobody calling when they said they said they would, leaving me not knowing for ages).

Have your EPU offered anything useful?

Not at all, just said to call back it bleeding went on for 7 days or got really heavy.

They said there was basically nothing they can do, which I understand but I was wondering when they do start offering tests and scans. I know I'm still early in the pregnancy but EPU is only for the 1st trimester so it's a short window to see them if it's over 6 weeks or something.

I think it really depends on your situation, and to some extent where you are as it seems to be different.

Mine had no interest in seeing me and weren’t at all helpful when I called. The blood tests were through A&E and (I think) the Gynae team at the hospital, not through the EPU.

It might be worth trying your GP? Some seem to offer tests and some don’t though, so it’s pot luck.

Sorry. It’s a really awful and stressful experience, especially when it feels like nobody wants to help. Genuinely, there just isn’t much they can do as you’re probably still too early for a scan but that doesn’t make it easier.

Thanks for your replies, it helps to know that you've got through the other side! Good luck with the rest of your pregnancy :)

I think ultimately it's because if you are having an early miscarriage, there is nothing they can do to help prevent/stop it. So the only reason (on their view) to do tests/scans would be to tell you whether you miscarried or not which I guess they think isn't a very good use of funds when you can wait a week or so and do a test yourself to find out.

I won’t say ‘try not too worry’, because think that’s a bit idiotic and impossible, but do try not to stress if you can.

I always try and reply to these kind of posts as found my experience so awful, and there are a lot of them! Bleeding in early pregnancy seems to be very common and isn’t always the end.

Hope it all works out for you.
