18 weeks and still no movement

I'm 18+3 and still haven't felt any movements from baby. It's making me anxious now.
My bump is growing and it's obvious to see I'm pregnant now however the lack of movement just worries me.
I'm only 8 stone so very slim and most people I've spoke to said I should be feeling something by now :(

My first baby I didn't feel until the day of my 20 week scan when I was 20+5. I'm 30 weeks with my 2nd now and probably started feeling it about 19 weeks this time round. I wouldn't worry, everyone is different.

Gigis · 22/08/2018 19:06

I didn't feel any movement that I was sure was the baby until about 24 weeks. Is this your first? With firsts it can take longer. Also, your size isn't necessarily a reliable indication of fetal movement, if the baby is positioned in certain ways it can make it harder to feel movement.
If you are very worried speak to your gp/midwife or book a private scan?

Girlwiththearabstrap · 22/08/2018 19:11

Nhs says most women start feeling movement around 18 weeks so I'm not sure who has been saying you definitely should be feeling something? I know it always seems like there's loads of folk going on about feeling loads of movement at 10 weeks but honestly 18+ seems normal to me especially with your first. I was well after 20 weeks first time round and 18 with my second.

Autumnfairy82 · 22/08/2018 19:14

Is this your first pregnancy? I was told when pregnant with my DD that it normally happens anytime between weeks 16 - 25 but it can happen later for some women during their first pregnancy.
I first felt her move around the 18 / 19 week mark. Try not to worry when people say you “should” be feeling this, feeling that, etc. Every pregnancy is different and every baby is different. Maybe have a chat with your midwife if concerned. Try to relax and enjoy.

I’m 19 weeks and sometimes I feel more movement than others. I have lots of scans because I’m high risk and it’s certain positions that make them hard to feel.

chloechloe · 22/08/2018 19:15

Don’t listen to them and try not to worry! 18w is still early to feel movement with your first. It may be that you’re just not noticing it - with me it just felt like a kernel of popcorn popping.

I felt movement at 19w with my first, 17w with my second and 19w with the third (anterior placenta this time).

GlennRheeismyfavourite · 22/08/2018 19:30

I only felt my little girl at 19 weeks and even then it was only little, infrequent movements to begin with - don't worry!!

RiskIt4Biscuit · 22/08/2018 19:31

I'm 20 weeks now, and I felt worried too when my midwife told me at the 16 week appointment that I should start feeling something soon.
It took at least 2 weeks before I started noticing something.

It is IMO very easy to miss or confuse for something else. It just feels like little bubbles - and it is very subtle.

I have found that I need to sit still in a quiet room in order for me to notice. If I'm out and about, driving, doing anything around the house or just having a good conversation, I tend not to notice movement.
I seem to have most movement during working hours, which means that it's really easy to miss even if I'm in a conference call.

It is still early to feel anything at 18 weeks.

My midwife suggested taking half an hour or so, just relaxing on the sofa with a cold drink without any distractions.

christmashope · 22/08/2018 19:33

With my first pregnancy I didn’t feel any movement until 25/26 weeks with my second pregnancy it was around the 22 week mark x

MrsPandaBear · 22/08/2018 19:34

I felt my first at 15 weeks, but didn't feel my 2nd until about 22 weeks. Like you, I was worried by 18 weeks. My 20 week scan showed the placenta was at the front, and was the reason I hadn't felt anything.

Condragulations · 22/08/2018 19:48

WIth my first I felt the first kick at 17 weeks BUT I remember everyone (and every app and pregnancy day by day book Blush) saying how early that was to feel kicks and how unusual it was to feel kicks so early. So I definitely wouldn’t buy into the “you should be feeling kicks by 18 weeks!” Thing. Also the kicks were few and far between until more like 20 weeks.

And as others have said, if the baby is kicking away into placenta you won’t feel that.
Unfortunately this is just the start of a lifetime of worrying about your baby Grin

Thanks for all your reassuring replies.

It is my first pregnancy after many years of trying and numerous ivf cycles!

I was 20/21 weeks with my first, also very petite. I wouldn't worry!

Cataline · 22/08/2018 22:50

I didn't feel anything at all until my 18th week and even then it was just a funny bubbling sensation.

Cataline · 22/08/2018 22:50

And congratulations!!

Reader1984 · 22/08/2018 23:04

NHS website: "You should start to feel your baby move between around 16 and 24 weeks of pregnancy. If this is your first baby, you might not feel movements until after 20 weeks."

fiadhflower · 23/08/2018 07:33

I also had these worries. By the 20-week scan, I thought I might be feeling some sporadic movement but it was really hard to tell. At the scan, I found out I had an anterior placenta - which makes it harder to feel movement. But I really wanted to feel the baby kick! Fast forward to 22 weeks, and the baby has 100 per cent made their presence known! It’s now easy to feel on my stomach, as well as internally. It’s a lovely feeling! So don’t worry about it for a few more weeks!

AussieMum28 · 23/08/2018 11:28

I'm 19+4 and still haven't felt anything. I'm not worried because we heard a good heartbeat a couple of weeks ago and I'm getting bigger by the day. Call your midwife if you're worried but you can feel flutters from 18-24 weeks!
