pregnant too early after c section

Okay- so I will admit I was irresponsible and wasn't using contraception, got pregnant very easily after very little sex!

I'm getting on though and so didn't want to wait too long, but at the same time didn't expect it to happen this quick

What are the risks? Conceived 6 1/2 months after c section

No one explicitly said how long to wait after c section, although I did get a few lectures from midwives about contraception (does everyone get this or just those who have had a c section)

Everyone gets the contraception lectures!

I was told to wait 12 months after my CS and then was pregnant again when DD1 had just turned one.

I think the main risk is when you’re in labour of uterine rupture. Not sure if there are any risks in pregnancy. They will be able to see when they scan you how well your internal incision has healed.

I had a VBAC with DD2. I’m not in the UK but my hospital won’t induce after a CS nor will they let you have an epidural but as both increase the risk of uterine rupture. I was happy to go ahead on that basis though.

I was told to wait two years after my c section, but similarly am getting on a bit Grin so left it a year to give me a six month window to give birth before 40, and conceived first month. The consultant said I could have a go at a vbac with the 21 month gap, but my chances of success would be lower as I hadn't laboured with my first (failed induction for reduced movements and growth). Section 2 in two weeks! Also said they wouldn't induce me this time.

Grasslands · 22/08/2018 05:50

told a two year wait between pregnancies if i wanted to try a vbac. risk of uterine rupture would not be induced...same as above.
i ended up with 3 c/s over 3 years and a tubal ligation with the third one.
i had a coil in place for one of those pregnancies...

I had mine 16 months apart. Yes I got lectures about it being too soon but also had the age issue too as I was 39 when I had my second. They are funny about the age thing here.

I was monitored more closely and they did it earlier but recovery was fine.

Wishicouldsleep · 22/08/2018 05:52

I left it 6 months before getting pregnant again! And midwife didn't bat an eyelid. At my booking appointment she didn't even mention that I shouldn't have not pregnant or any risks for getting pg so soon.

I had my second baby 4 months ago (they are 16 months apart). I decided not to go for a VBAC. But that wasn't because I was told I was at high risk of rupture, but because I didn't want to repeat my first labour experience.
All went fine (I happen to scar very badly and discovered I had keloid scarring so perhaps it was a good move having a second c section.)

You will be absolutely fine! I'd be more concerned about the small age gap Grin (which is totally fine by the way)

Phillipa12 · 22/08/2018 06:28

My sister had twins 13 months after her first section, no one batted an eyelid. I had dc4 15 months after dc3 , all 4 were sections and dc4 weighed 11.6lbs, midwives were not bothered either.

TinyMarie · 22/08/2018 06:46

My friend fell pregnant 3 months after her first who was delivered by emergency C Section. They advised her to have a 2nd one for fear of rupture at the birth and all went fine.

donniemurdo · 22/08/2018 06:47

I wasn't told anything about length of gap after c-section and was pregnant with DS2 5 months after DS1 was born so there is 16 months between them.

BexusSugarush · 22/08/2018 09:27

6 and a half months is an impressive wait-time! I have a friend who got pregnant 7 weeks after giving birth!

Littlebelina · 22/08/2018 09:42

6months here. Had a neonatal death and didn't want to wait too long as getting older and have had an ectopic previously as well. Will be having a 3rd section.

I asked my GP and she thought 6months but couldn't find clear guidance. Guidance online ranged from 6months to 2years (but came across folks with shorter gaps).

I haven't had any lectures from either midwives or consultants about the gap (although given the circumstances they would have to be very thick skinned!). I'm sure you'll be fine although expect to be strongly advised to have a section as risk of rupture during labour will be higher with a short gap

rubyroot · 22/08/2018 10:17

Thank you everyone, that has put my mind at risk. Stupid I know, but I was more worried about the bump growing and my scar stretching and coming open Blush

I would like to opt for a c section as horrid painful induction with 3 epidurals, failure to progress and then emergency c section at the very end! I hope they'll let me given the circumstances.

@mrsnec what do you mean they are funny about the age thing here?

@wishicouldsleep so you got a choice because of risk of uterine rupture?

Ha*@wishicouldsleep* I am a little concerned about the age gap, but figured I don't have time to waste, I am very nearly 40 and I guess the small age gap will get better over time and be beneficial in the end. 7

My Mum had three all one year and three months in between and also looked after her mother with alzheimers at home. She just got on with it, so I can't really complain.

@BexusSugarush Shock that's bloody quick, not sure it's an impressive wait time though.

@Littlebelina really sorry to hear that it must have been/still must be dreadful. My worst nightmare Flowers

Hi OP, I think it's just a cultural thing in the country I live in. They used the term 'geriatric mother' with me even at the age of 37. And one of my doctors was horrified when I declined something similar to a Harmony test.

However it's different in other places and I've had friends in the UK have babies much older than me and the hcp's never mentioned it.

mostdays · 22/08/2018 10:55

I used to follow someone on livejournal years ago who had an emergency section, conceived again within weeks and had her next baby by unassisted VBAC in her bathtub. I am definitely not advising you have an unassisted home VBAC(!) but that is a story to show that whilst it's probably better to follow advice and leave a decent period of time between a section and another pregnancy, a small gap does not have to mean things will go badly.

rubyroot · 22/08/2018 11:35

Aaahhh @mrsnec- a different country, I wasn't sure.

I think geriatric mothers is a term that is used isn't it?!

But yes, asides from receiving a number 1 on the risk assessment for age, this did not lead to any extra interventions and I never really felt I was judged or treated differently. Indeed, the issue came from me wondering if my age created an issue!
