corpus luteum cyst

Anyone had one? What happened?
Found during an early scan- 4.5cm. Sonographer said it was a good cyst, fairly common, happened because of pregnancy and will disappear by 12 weeks.
Of course I googled it- on the whole confirmed what sonographer says- often disappears when placenta takes over.
But, if it gets big can lead to twisted ovary- rare I think.
Can also rupture, alo unlikely but not as rare as above.

Hi, I don’t think it’s anything to worry about. I had a private scan at 8 weeks and they said exactly the same to me - on my left ovary. I then had my NHS 12 week scan yesterday and mentioned about the corpus luteum cyst and the sonographer said it was absolutely normal, nothing to worry about and mine had now gone down to less than 1cm. So hope that helps to put your mind at rest! Smile

I had one too! It’s all very normal. I was told it’s what left after the egg is released. All very clever x

Hi OP I had one it was about the same size as yours. I had a lot of pain and weekly scans from 4-10 weeks.

By 12 weeks it was completely gone.

Changenameday · 21/08/2018 22:27

I had one similar size before I was pregnant. Asked them to check at first scan and there was no sign of it x

Blinkatme182 why did you have weekly scans?

I think it’s part of the normal process of pregnancy. Something that tends to be there, sometimes is not. When a clinician reports on special tests (including imaging) it’s standard to report all findings, normal and not.

I had a big one! First picked up at 6week scan, had grown bigger at 10 week scan by a fair amount, and the same size still at 12 week scan. Was living in fear of twisted ovary, and I'd been told not to worry it'll "pop" eventually which also worried me to death!

Went for 16 week scan, no mention of it, and no mention at 20w, so it just went eventually somewhere between the 12 - 16 week scans. Really didn't think it would do because of the size of it still at 12 weeks! I'm 38 weeks now and had actually forgotton all about that till reading this! Try not to worry x

rubyroot · 21/08/2018 22:51

Oooh lolli- bet that was worrying for you

Glad it's gone!

A corpus luteum is where your ovary has released an egg and said egg has been fertilised. It's completely normal and you'll get something similar every time you ovulate and an egg is released from a follicle. It's very very rare it will cause twisted ovaries. You probably won't even notice it disappear.
