CVS results back

I am so relieved to be able to write that after being given a nuchal score of 1:6 last week, I got my CVS results back today and they are NORMAL! No T13, no T18 and no T21. And it's a boy!

We terminated a pregnancy, my first little dd, for a lethal chromosomal rearrangement in 2005 and, while I am not sure that I could have done so again for a non-lethal condition like DS, and I am just so glad that I don't have to even think about such decisions.

We had another little girl last year and I'm excited to being having a boy, but even more excited to be having another healthy baby.

Just had to share, as we haven't even really told anyone that we're pregnant yet, so couldn't tell anyone about the anxious few days we've had.

Think I might go and have a hot chocolate!

Congratulations, Stargazer!!!
Have a question for you if you don't mind. Did you do a private CVS or was it done by NHS? I'm asking because I'll be having one done as well after my nuchal (I need to be 100% sure all will be ok). Have looked into the private scan on Harley St, but that will cost £450. Does NHS do CVS for free or do you have to pay for it regardless? Thanks!

Stargazing · 05/06/2007 21:36

hi there Castanet
I had in done on the NHS; it was free and immediate - literally within an hour of the nuchal scan.

NHS policy is that anyone with a risk of 1 in 250 (I think) or less is 'high risk' and therefore 'advised' to have invasive testing (or so the doctor told me) - but I don't think that they can refuse you testing, nor charge you for it, if your risk is substantially less than that. They will probably try to talk you out of it though. The basis for that is that they say that the m/c risk for CVS is about 1%, or 1 in 100, so when weighed up against a nuchal score of, say 1 in 800, it's 'not worth it'.

BUT 1 in 100 is the world wide standard of risk - you should ask what that particular hospital's risk is as it is likely to be much lower. For instance, I was at Kings in London, which is one of the leading fetal medicine hospitals in the UK, so I knew damn well that their m/c rate would be loads lower than 1 in 100.

Basically, my experience is that you can't be refused anything really - you may just have to be a little insistent, which can sometimes be tough when you're confronted by white coats and 'policy', ynwim?

Hope it all goes well - best of luck!

Thanks! Another question if I may, please , being blessed with 'robust health' as my GP put it , I'm not at all familiar with NHS rules etc. Can I choose the hospital I'd like to go to, for example Kings in London and still have the scan on NHS, or am I destined to go where my post code sends me to...

Stargazing · 05/06/2007 22:12

hmmm .. I think that you would only be referred to a hospital outside of you catchment area or whatever they call it if there was a 'problem'. Otherwise your doctor or midwife will book you in at your area hospital for your nuchal and it will go from there. But I think that nuchals aren't offered as a matter of course everywhere, actually - umm, not sure now!! How pregnant are you? Where in the country are you? Anyone else have any insights about this?

Thanks again! My hospital offers both nuchal and CVS (just checked their website), but I want to make sure I get the best possible doctors/hospital, to lower the risk.. Bit scared of the whole thing, really...

Chooster · 05/06/2007 22:43

Nichals aren't offered as a matter of course everywhere, as an example you dont get them on the NHS in Scotland, but I think they are routine in most places in England. I also had a CVS due to a very bad nuchal fold measurement (10x normal) and again it was done while I was with the consultant so I had no choice about location, not that I think I would have been in a fit state to make an informed decision.

I'm now 33wks pregnant again and I was told I could opt for a CVS based on my history but you don't get offered one as a matter of course unless you are high risk in some way. As far as I know, you can't get one on the NHS if you are low risk no matter how much you insist. This is just based on my experience in Scotland, but definately worth chatting this through with midwife / GP, bascially anyone who knows the situation in your area.

Good luck whatever you end up doing! And Congratualtions Stargazing - thats wonderful news!

Chooster · 05/06/2007 22:43

Oopps, nuchals!
