Cerazette warning

I just wanted to warn other people about going on cerazette and to take time to do your research about it prior to starting taking it. I was put on it after having my little girl as I was breast feeding and I never really felt great on it. I felt very anxious and thought it was probably just because we were going through quite a lot however even over things that would not normally bother me I was overreacting and stressing. I was not told that this can be a side effect.
I decided to come off of it when I finished breastfeeding after 14 months and I can honestly say I felt shocking- headaches, sick and drained which lasted about a week. I never got a withdrawal bleed but fell pregnant a couple of weeks later. Unfortunately the baby is not viable and we are currently waiting to find out if it’s eptopic- apparently with cerazette in your system you are at a higher risk.
I obviously didn’t do my research but my Dr did not inform me of any risk - I had given birth 6 weeks prior to her giving me it therefore I think it should of been discussed.

I am not saying that anyone’s experience will be the same I just want other women to be aware that this pill can have some really crappy side effects. I am so upset, stressed and distraught to be losing a baby so if I can prevent one person going through the same thing then that’s something to come of the situation.

Oh crikey you poor thing! Flowers

My cerazette experience was broadly fine (apart from long and irregular periods) but I know that it affects everyone differently.

I'm really sorry to hear about your pregnancy, I hope it isn't ectopic :(

Sandstormbrewing · 21/08/2018 17:43

Thing is, the GP prescribed it as a contraceptive, which is what it is. If you wanted to know the risks of stopping using it then you need to see someone to discuss that before stopping it.

Thankfully cerezette has been wonderful for me but I've had other shocking side effects on other pills!

Everyone is different and side effects vary from person to person.

Thanks @Stephisaur

I am not for a minute saying everyone will go through this. As mentioned I am just highlighting that women should be a bit more educated than I was about it- I take responsibility for not doing my research. I was advised to come off it after breast feeding had ceased and the Dr said nothing about the risks. I was on microgynon for years I’m not against any form of the pill, I was just trying to help as when I went to the hospital several midwives said cerazette is quite a complex pill. Anyway, bit upset to be justifying what I wrote so I’ll leave it at that.

I was on Cerazette for three years and had no problems, but it can affect everyone differently. So sorry you had such a bad experience x

MrsDrambuie · 21/08/2018 18:51

I was on Cerazette / Cerelle for 4-5 years with no problems (and hardly any periods either) and when we wanted to start TTC I was advised to leave a 3-month gap of taking no contraceptives (instead had to use condoms) before actually TTC. From there it took almost 2 years and an HSG before I fell pregnant (incidentally, the same cycle as the HSG).

I know my experience doesn’t help OP but I’m recording it here in case it does help someone.

We were recommended three months too. Not sure if this would have been the same with another pill.

OP you should research every method of contraception you are advised to use/take and not just leave it to the doctors to inform you. Some GPs/nurses/FPCs will give you information leaflets but not all will so the onus is on you to do some basic research.

This site contains useful information - www.medicines.org.uk/emc

If you can't be bothered to do the research you should at least read the patient information leaflet in the packet before taking it.

In my case Cerazette lead to hair loss which is one of the uncommon side effects listed.
