Worried...high blood pressure?

So I just had my growth scan. Everything looked good and he’s actually following the line well (still top line) but not shot up as I was worried about.
Now another thing to worry about...they took my blood pressure after the scan before I saw the consultant and it was 153/70. The top number is very high for me. I mean I’ve been feeling anxious and stressed today and didn’t get much sleep last night. The Midwife said it’s the bottom number they worry about anyway. There was no protein in my urine and I have no swelling.
Anyway, the consultant seemed quite concerned and told me I need to take it again today when I get home (I have my own monitor) or go to the GP surgery. But the Midwife didn’t seem as worried. I’m going to take it when I get back home...however I’m now concerned I’m on my way to developing pre eclampsia.

I had high blood pressure in pregnancy due to some external stress which it seems like you have. I got sent home and told to take a rest. Then I went in for monitoring that afternoon and I was fine. If you are worried go to the hospital and they will monitor you for a few hours, but really I would rest up and relax as much as you can and you might find the pressure goes down very quickly. I would worry about pre eclampsia if you have no other symptoms. Blood pressure changes up and down whether we are pregnant or not.

Feel better soon!

I meant to say wouldn't worry, not would!

The systolic pressure (top number) is very easily influenced by mood or activity, which is why whilst we don’t ignore it, I wouldn’t get worked up by a one off high systolic reading. I probably would have repeated your blood pressure a couple of times after getting you to to calm down and do some deep breathing to be on the safe side but I can understand why your consultant may have thought it more sensible for you to check at home where you might feel more relaxed.

Don’t panic! It’s honestly not a terrible sign.

Just took it again at home and it’s showing 134/80

I have pregnancy induced hypertension and my readings were hitting 150/100 plus when I hit 34 weeks.

Whilst they don't like the top number being high they are focussed on the bottom one. Even on medication my readings are around 140/90 which they are ok with (and I'm nearly 39 weeks) I check my readings at home and have to go up to hospital either if readings are over 150/100 (target set for me by my consultant) or if I have any other PE symptoms. It doesn't help that when I get stressed I can easily send my bp up and when that has happened I've been in to antenatal triage and monitored to make sure all ok. They will tell you quick enough if they are concerned and if you can check it at home always call if you're worried.

If you are worried you should pop into triage and get monitored just to put your mind at rest. They wont mind in the slightest. Better safe than sorry.

NameChange2306 · 21/08/2018 13:40

I won’t be going up to triage as I’ve literally just been to the hospital and back. It’s not a short journey either. I’ve taken it at home and it seems fine so I’m not too concerned. I’ll keep an eye out for any other symptoms.
They seemed okay about it because the bottom number was low.

Also he’s moving loads and I don’t have any concerns about him as I’ve just had the growth scan a few hours ago.
