Are some babies much less active than others?

Hi all,
I am 25 weeks with no 2 and, while I am getting a degree of kicking/ movement, it's nothing like I recall with DD.

I know that I have an anterior placenta this time but, even factoring that in, it seems that hours go by without my feeling anything at all whereas DD kicked me black and blue for about 16 weeks!

I definitely get the minimum "10 kicks per day" so am not especially concerned but just wondered if others have noticed big variations in the frequency and general viciousness of activity in different pregnancies?

Thanks!

Hiya

My BF and I were pg 2 weeks apart. I had the most hyperactive baby from about 16-17weeks. She, on the other hand, had no discernable movements until about 26 weeks and her baby was very sluggish.

We both gave birth to healthy bouncing boys.

So in answer to your Q, the answer is YES

Yes! With my dd I felt her kick at 14 and half weeks - and I mean kicks, none of this bubbles in the tummy folk talk about. She was very active the whole pg - scanned at 9wks initially due to previous mc and even scanner commented on how lively she was. She's no diff now she's 20 months old, has always been active and only stops when sleeping. This time round I didn't feel any hefty movements til nearer 17/18 weeks but did feel some flutters before that. At my 20 wk scan they ended up tipping me with my feet in the air so that the baby would move his hands from behind his head so they could check fingers etc - he's always been much quieter although would easily make the required quota. Don't know if it's a gender diff or personality diff but this is def a quieter more placid baby - in utero anyway - and if follows the same pattern as his sister am expecting a very diff character this time round - finally get to meet him in around 3 wks time .

Oooo good luck Twiga.

BF and I were PG at same time...very different movements. As long as you're getting the min movements then should be fine.

Yes, ds2 was much more active in the womb than ds1 ever was. He's now 15 months and won't sit still for more than 10 seconds !

gingernut · 04/06/2007 21:33

Yes, my ds1 was a whirlwind in the womb and still is. ds2 kicked a lot less when I was pg and turned out to be much more placid.

midnightexpress · 04/06/2007 21:45

Mine were both super-quiet in utero, but never blardy stop now they're out, bless 'em, so don't count your chickens...

pendulum · 04/06/2007 22:19

ooh thanks, that's v reassuring! DD has been a "whirlwind" as you say gingernut since birth- was wakeful colicky baby and now is fantastic but non-stop chattering and active 3YO. Quite fancy having one that could be described as "placid", although I note your warning midnightexpress....

Also interestring to note from the replies no real distinction between the sexes- lots of people have mentioned to me that their girls kicked more but that doesn't seem to be borne out here (I don't know what I'm having.)

Good luck Twiga- wishing you some (relatively) placid times ahead!

Don't underestimate the padding qualities of an anterior placenta. I had one with DS and hardly felt him at all - DD is due in August and with a conventionally positioned placenta is wriggling away all day. I was concerned with DS that if his movements decreased I wouldnt know and in my last few weeks went up to the labour ward several times to get strapped up to monitors. The graph would look like an earthquake but I couldn't feel a thing!

twoplusone · 05/06/2007 10:35

pendulum, my dd moved about a fair bit, my ds I hardley felt him move, he was a very chilled baby, in the womb,
and this one.. is very very active.. (another boy)

So yes is the answer to your question.x
