Blood transfusion?

Hi everyone!

I'm not a parent myself, but I'm the concerned cousin of a relative who is due to have their first child in November.

I wasn't sure where else to get advice from so I thought coming here would be best.

My cousin has been struggling a lot with morning sickness (which continues now but not as frequently) and recently she's been having problems breathing. She has been to the doctor several times and has already had multiple blood tests. Most recently, she's been told she might need a blood transfusion.

Has anyone here experienced this? What are the effects? Any possible issues for the baby and the mother?

Hello, I have had a blood transfusion. Not during pregnancy though but after I gave birth to my daughter (who is now 2) I lost 3 and a half pints of my blood due to a deep tear and using blood thinning medication throughout my pregnancy.
It was fine for me and after a few days I felt like I had a lot of energy 😂 They screen the blood 4 times to check there is no nasty viruses or diseases in it too, so it's completely safe.

I had 2 blood transfusions after having my son.
I had a heavy haemorrhage after having him. I'm so glad I did. Before the transfusion my lips literally had no colour in them. I was breathless and faint. I had no energy at all, just picking up my newborn DS felt like I had run a couple of miles.

It was like the life was our back into me. Even the lovely lady who have our hot drinks on the ward remarked the next day I had a much better colour, I had literally been sallow and white.

I too, had been worried about the idea of it , but I'm so glad I did. The only thing I wish is that I could now donate blood, after the difference it made to me. Unfortunately not able to after receiving a donation.
It will really help them if they need it.

Is this because she has low iron levels? That's not uncommon in pregnancy and if it doesn't respond to iron treatment then they need to get the levels up somehow. If your iron is too low then your blood can stop clotting and that can carry a risk during childbirth (or other medical procedures).
