Pregnant by accident at 43... Chances of miscarriage?

I didn’t think I could get pregnant due to my age, PCOS, fibroids, etc. So I have been a bit slapdash about using condoms with my OH. When my period was a few days late and I had sore boobs and “period“ pain for a couple of days I just thought a monster period was brewing, maybe even early signs of menopause. But Google said it could be pregnancy - I thought v unlikely but better check. ClearBlue test this evening says 2-3 weeks pregnant!!! I’m in shock. It’s my first ever pregnancy.

My question is - how likely am I to miscarry? Stats I’ve seen say at least 50/50... I hadn’t been taking extra vitamins, and have drunk a fair amount in the past few weeks so I think it’s pretty likely...

Also, planning on telling my OH tomorrow (we don’t live together) who has never wanted kids - any advice??

Any thoughts v gratefully received...

Thanks, I'm seeing my GP on Thursday so will have lots of questions!

OP, GPs and midwives are now more use to seeing older first time mothers but really aren't that helpful. When you get to see a consultant (or the staff under them) a few weeks after your booking appointment then s/he should be able to answer more questions.

When you go to consultant's appointments see if your OH can come with you. Ideally try and arrange your future scans and consultants appointments one after another as it is less stressful. Also choose a local maternity hospital that has a good reputation for dealing with difficult births as they will have dealt with women in the same situation as you before. However until then you have to take it a day at a time.

Btw I'm the same age as you and due in a few weeks but due to health complications I have to be induced at 39 weeks with my first. I also got pregnant during a month myself and OH drunk rather a lot. My mum had me at 42 and was allowed to go well over her due date while having the same health complications, so statistically I shouldn't be here.

There are progesterone suppositories that help prevent miscarriage. I took them because my progestogene was v v low and I never ovulate, basically. So even though I did conceive (I. E. My progestogene was high enough to conceive) it was only because I was taking vitamins to increase progesterone and I was scared once I conceived it would plummet again and I'd lose the baby.

And I believe if you take Clomid or are with a fertility specialist they often prescribe them.

So you could tell your doctor you want them maybe. They're pretty gloopy and messy and a bit horrible. But gave me reassurance.

That said, they won't prevent a chromosomal miscarriage obviously. But since you have PCOS and that goes hand in hand with low progesterone and you need progesterone for the first 12 weeks so as not to miscarry...... Worth asking about.

I conceived at 42.7 nd had a perfect ds at 43!!
Good luck op - exciting times ahead!!

This happened to me at 44. Ds was born shortly after my 45 birthday. Like you, first pregnancy, I wasn’t living with my dp.
I’d been told I couldn’t have children so it was a big shock. I hadn’t been taking vitamins or avoiding alcohol.
But after dp had some time to get used to the idea, it was ok.
Pregnancy was uneventful although I did have an amino to check things were ok. Normal delivery, no problems so far.
Ds is now 10 and as normal as any 10yo boy can be Smile
I resumed my career, ds goes to Afterschool club, life is good. I wouldn’t change a thing.

I was 44 thought it was the menopause. Big shock other DC at uni. What I did was have the amnio. privately the NHS withdrew the fluid I had a bottle and an envelope just had to post it off, results in 24 hours was £100 at the time now five times that. Then you will know exactly what you are facing.

Congratulations op!

ChristmasAccountant · 05/09/2018 07:29

Congratulations Op. I am 40 and pregnant with unexpected #3. I’m under the care of a consultant, I’m on aspirin in case of high blood pressure (apparently common with mums over 40), and I get regular growth scans. But apart from that everything is just a normal pregnancy.

Hope you’ve got over the shock and can relax a little now you’ve seen the baby!

PinkSquidgyPig · 05/09/2018 22:43

Congratulations Merry, I hope all goes well for you. 💖
Let us know. I'm rooting for you.
A little suggestion: ask for a diabetes test early if you think it's a possibility. (I remember you have PCOS). I got tested early due to family history, age and weight. The early diagnosis showed I had it early and kept my baby healthy by managing the condition very tightly. She was a healthy 7.7lb at birth. Xx
