Gestational diabetes. Feeling very low & fed up

I was diagnosed with GD recently, I'm 18 weeks pregnant. I'm not even 8 stone and actually loosing weight now which is worrying me.
I'm struggling to eat cheese, eggs and so much fatty foods as it makes me feel sick.
There's only so many nuts I can eat a day.

I just feel really fed up about it. It took a lot to get pregnant to start with (5 ivf s) now I feel like my body isn't coping :(

Sorry to hear this. I was overweight so the losing weight issue was a bonus for me but I can see why it’s worrying you. I had access to a nutritionist via the diabetic clinic I attended during my pregnancy - do you have the same and if so, do you think you could go along and chat to them about what you can eat and get help from them keeping your weight up but your sugars down?

Have you seen a dietician to discuss what you should be eating? There are still carbs you can eat. Are you insulin controlled or diet controlled? When I had it I controlled it by diet.

I think I'll give them sting tomorrow and see what they say. I'm just feeling like a failure atm. DH has gone shopping to see what he can find with zero carbs & sugar that isn't cheese or nuts!

You don't need zero carbs though, you can still eat them

I am still having the odd slice of whole meal but that's all my body can handle otherwise readings go through the roof.

You are NOT a failure. Flowers It’s just a quirk of your body. I know how you feel, I was devastated when I was diagnosed and really beat myself up about it for a while but realised quite quickly that there was no point in that and just to get on and handle it the very best I could. Speak to the dietitian asap and hopefully they can help.

Oh and try rye bread, as I recall it was the best option if you needed a bread ‘fix’!

Lidl and asda have protein bread/rolls which are lovely

Try things like apple slices or banana with peanut/almond/macademia butter, the protein balances the sugar in the fruit and the tart apple cuts through the richness of the nut butter.

Don't worry Stillmonday if all you've been told is how to control it via diet, when you tell them that all you can handle is the odd slice of wholemeal they'll prescribe metformin which is super safe in pregnancy!

I would chomp on some olives and add cream to decaff coffee. Also, try changing up the nuts. I'm off cashews now (a bit too rich) but on walnuts!
