Pregnancy vitamins!?

Since finding out I was expecting with my first last month, I spoke to a pharmacist to see what vitamins I should be taking (I don't eat red meat, fish or much vegtables) to make sure my unborn baby is not missing anything they need, I was told pregnacare (boots own make) was suitable. Since having an appointment with the midwife she gave me vitamins and told me I should be taking these, folic acid and vitamin D I believe. Does anyone know if these are doing everything they need to be giving to my baby or should I switch back? And is it safe to just switch back? Please help🤗

If the pregnacare/boots own brand contain the same amounts of vit D and folic acid then there's no reason why you shouldn't take those instead.

Pregnacare has the guideline amount of D and folic acid, it just has other useful supplements as well. The health start vitamins that midwives give include essential ones, but if you've already bought pregnacare you might as well take those. There's no risks changing between the two, the main thing is that you get at least the recommended amount of D and folic acid, rest largely depends on your diet.

Are you sure she wasn't wanting you to take both? You should definitely take the vitamin d on top of the Pregnacare, not instead.

Why, @SofiaAmes, if the pregnacare contains the same amount of vit D?

I'm not entirely sure, (this is based on what other posters have said on previous threads) but I believe that the pregnacare doesn't contain enough vitamin d. The guideline amounts are based on old research and the current research recommends between 2000 to 5000iu a day for adults for vitamin d. (My father is a well known researcher who works on vitamin d, so I happen to know a lot about this specifically.)

Sorry, I should have added, so really one probably wants both to get an adequate amount of vitamin d.
