TRAVELLING ABROAD AFTER IVF?

TRAVELLING ABROAD AFTER IVF

Me and my husband really want to go on a holiday to Mauritius, it is Zika free which is why we have chosen that as a location. It is just a pure relaxation holiday and we have stayed at the hotel before (after TTC for so long Zika free has been our location criteria)

Because of work commitments we can not go away in Nov/Dec/Jan

The latest window we have to get away this year would be about the 12th October for about 12 days, which feels so close after the IVF, but then I feel like I can not keeping putting life off in hope we might get pregnant, we did not go away at all last year and have had a week off this year to go down to Cornwall as it was a friends wedding. Always trying to save money and holiday entitlement at work to use for IVF etc.

Half of me thinks that if god willing we are successful with our IVF it would be lovely to have one last adult holiday together.

I have of course been Googling like mad the safety of flying when in early stages of pregnancy and can not find any dangers apart from the fact it can be unpleasant if you suffer from morning sickness.

By the 12th Oct I am assuming we will know if the IVF was successful and will have been able to rule out if it was an ectopic pregnancy as I believe they scan you if you are lucky enough (everything crossed) to have our dream of a positive test to check where the embryo has implanted correctly?

I would love to hear your honest opinions and please be honest!!!!

It should be fine but you haven’t said when you are having IVF!

Viability scan is usually at 7 weeks or so (approx 4 weeks after transfer) if you're successful.

@Darkstar4855 Our cycle will start on 3rd Sept, thats when I start injecting, I am on short protocol, so egg transfer should be around 21st September.
So it will be 3 weeks after egg transfer.

When are you having the IVF?
I have flown many times in early pregnancy (commuted to Milan weekly in my first pregnancy). It was fine. Not nice when you’ve got morning sickness but it’s tolerable! Just take sick bags and stay hydrated.

Ok, so depends on how many days the embryo is but that would put you at the equivalent of 5-5.5 weeks pregnant if successful. That’s probably too early for a scan as before about six weeks the pregnancy is usually too small to see.

I think you are perfectly safe to fly/go on holiday but there is the risk that you might get a positive test but then miscarry or have an ectopic pregnancy - being on holiday wouldn’t affect the outcome but does mean you would be away from homes/friends/family and would need to think about medical care and insurance just in case.

Is it worth contacting your clinic and seeing what their advice is?

Good luck!

Talk to your clinic about your worries, and their schedule for scans. Then you’ll have a clear idea from people who know your individual case.

I had a 5 day blastocyst transferred on 1st December 2016, and we went away for Christmas that year - a week away involving 2 short flights in a little 12-seater plane. When I asked the nurse she said “well you wouldn’t get me in that kind of plane for a million pounds, but there’s no specific extra risk to your pregnancy!”

It was fine, I wasn’t too vomity yet and it was a good distraction whilst waiting for our first scan.

And loads of luck for your next cycle. Flowers
