Pepperoni Pizza?!

Hi,

Now this may sound bonkers I don't know but I have been driving myself crazy all day because I ate a pepperoni pizza last night and have been sick this morning (after not having any sickness from 14 weeks, now 20)

I have convinced myself the pepperoni had listeria! Has anyone heard whether it is safe or not? From the nhs website it looks like it's ok cooked on pizza?

Thanks!

As far as I'm aware, it's fine if it's cooked. How are you feeling this afternoon?

CobaltRose · 16/08/2018 14:06

It's totally fine as long as it's cooked.

Thanks for that it's made me feel better!

Feel fine this afternoon it maybe a bit tired, hopefully it was just a Random bought of returning MS

The reason meats like pepperoni are considered unsafe for pregnant women is because they are cured (basically means salted) and dried rather than cooked. Pepperoni is essentially raw, so there is the possibility that some parasites and bacteria which are resistant to the curing may be alive in it and can make you sick. Cooking kills these, so if you've eaten it cooked on a pizza, then it is just as safe as eating any other cooked meat. Assuming it was all in date and didn't taste funky, it's unlikely to be what caused your sickness. :)

I’ve found that I struggle to digest greasy foods like pizza, fish and chips etc now so it could be that rather than what was on the pizza :)

Hope you are feeling a bit better xz

Thanks so much, don't feel as guilty for eating the pizza now! Tend to overthink everything at the minute and google is the devil!!

I’m sure the nhs site is reliable Smile

Avoid Google!!

sneakpeek1414 · 17/08/2018 09:00

Yep google is the worst! The nhs site said 'the risk is reduced' when the pepperoni is cooked, I just read it as there's still a risk and panicked Confused

The risk is already very low. Cooking it basically eliminates the risk. They can't say "eliminates" because some people won't cook it properly and exceptions can always occur.

That's something to keep in mind with everything you read:

  1. what was the risk before the increased/decreased risk (i.e. "X raises the chance of premature birth by 20%" - well, it was already 0.000005% before so a 20% increase may not be something to worry about).

  2. Is there a remote possibility that something could happen? If so, medical advice sites will not tell you "x eliminates risk" but rather "x reduces risk". This makes it sound like the risk is still something you need to think about, when in fact they have to leave open most possibilities because weird things happen in the world.

Thanks that is really helpful and has made me feel tonnes better!

Feel OK today with no sickness and I'm thinking a listeria infection would have made me sick more than once so I was just being paranoid!
