Baby room furniture

Not strictly pregnancy related but certainly 'baby is on its way' related!
Where have people bought their baby room furniture form, i.e. cot and chest of drawers etc from?
Budget wise, hoping to go mid price so say approx £300-600 for cot and chest of drawers (we have decided against a wardrobe as we just don't have the space!).
Any recommendations on places to look either in-store or online? We aren't sure if we want to go down the Ikea route only because we've had so many things from them in the past and just don't think they are as sturdy as other items we've had form elsewhere.
Thanks!

@iwantaunicorn I love the mokee wool nest moses baskets. Did they come in your bundle? I much prefer the look of a more chunky sleigh type cot bed but the mokee bundle of cot and wool nest is really good value! How are you finding the cot? Is it well made etc? Is it self assembly? Is it smaller than normal cots? It says it should last until baby is 2/3 years old (by which point we would like another baby anyway so maybe irrelevant for first cot) but it's listed as a mini cot, does it seem a lot smaller to you? Does it have different sized mattress so are sheets hard/expensive to buy? Really considering this cot now!

We got ours from Mamas & Papas, really pleased with it. Think our 3 piece was about £700 so a 2 piece should be within budget. (If you book a personal shopping experience you also get discount for spending a certain amount of money)

We bought the comfort baby 7 in 1 cot. For first six months it was in the round cot configuration in our room with the changing table in the nursery. Then at six months moved the round cot into the nu dry as dc is very small and didn't need to move into the oval cot til 8 monthswhen in oval cot it meant we no longer had a changing table but by that time dc was a climber and changing tables were dangerous. We've been very happy with the cot so far.

Another shout out for the Mokee cot bed- we bought the mint coloured version for dd with mattress (that has a removable cover for washing) plus delivery for £105.

Great value as we’ll be using the cot-bed function instead of buying a toddler bed.

They do really nice colour ways that are a bit different to the usual plain white or beech woods that are available everywhere else.

I got a kids wardrobe (£80) drawers (around £50) and a cube storage with boxes (about £30 all in) from IKEA, and then my cot bed and mattress from Kiddicare for around £230/250! so probably only around £400 for everything . It's all really nice and sturdy

Freecycle for cot, used ikea drawers we already had.

@SophieStripe we had the option of adding the Moses baskets to the bundle, but decided against it as we wanted the twins to cosleep for the first few weeks until they went in their own beds so got a next to me crib. They look absolutely gorgeous and I’m pretty gutted we didn’t get them!

I’m loving the cots, they’re incredibly well made, and although simple in style they’re sturdy and look to me that they should’ve been much more expensive than they were! For the money I was worried it was going to be cheap and flimsy, but I was completely wrong.

They frame is self assembly, but the slatted base is pre assembled. It’s fitted together using Allen keys, which they include.

The standard size cot is 70x140, and the mokee is 60x120, and I’ve never struggled to find sheets etc - I’ve got silentnight sheets from amazon in our colour scheme which are our go to sheets, but also bought some from Aldi and baby’s r us when they were going as back ups (they’re my first and I was anticipating getting through about 9 sheets a day!). I don’t think they’re any more expensive than the regular size, sometimes I’ve found them to be cheaper as they’re a little smaller. They’re very easy to find online, and I’ve never struggled to find bedding for our nursery theme. We live in the back of beyond so the shops don’t stock it, if we were more city based it might be easier.

It does have a different sized mattress, but it was included in the bundle. It’s firm, but comfortable at the same time. The drawer underneath isn’t fitted, but goes under nicely and is a dream to roll in and out. The shelves are fab, the changing mat Velcros on to the cot when not in use which is a nice touch!

It doesn’t seem a lot smaller to me, my babies are only 6 months now but they’re big (think larger only babies!) and they’ve got stacks of room to roll, kick and work their way round the cot.

They quite often have 10% off and special offers, and as an added bonus they’re on topcashback too 😉

@dinosaurkisses we’ve got the mint for our two as well, I love the colour!

I don’t work for mokee, I’m just very impressed with our cots.

we bought a cot second hand from gumtree, chest of drawers from b&m, and was lucky enough to be gifted a changing unit from Argos from a close friend and a Moses basket and stand from my mum. The baby's room is tiny so we dont have space for a wardrobe. Aldi have their baby event starting tomorrow and they do some really lovely furniture

flamingox · 15/08/2018 11:39

@SophieStripe it's called me-baby on eBay x

cookiesaurus · 15/08/2018 13:35

We went for Kidsmill furniture in the end - I think they're a Dutch company. There's a bit of a lead time on delivery so we've yet to receive it but feedback online seems good and a close friend recommended them as she loves her furniture from them!

MummyGina · 15/08/2018 14:41

If you want something even cheaper try amazon - I found some I liked on mothercare and then looked there and they had the same ones for much less! The brand we got is east coast and for the price they are surprisingly sturdy and nice - compared to Ikea much better quality!

theruffles · 15/08/2018 20:29

We brought a Mamas & Papas wardrobe, chest of drawers/changing table and cot bed on Gumtree for £200. It's a lovely set and in brilliant condition - we just need to buy a new mattress for the cot. We didn't have a large budget to furnish the baby's room so Gumtree has been fantastic. We brought a rocking chair for £50 too instead of the more expensive glider I had been looking at.

Equimum · 15/08/2018 23:35

When we had DS1 nearly six years ago, we bought a beautiful Cotbed from John Lewis, and then bought a good quality oak chest of drawers from a local independent. The Cotbed lasted DS until he was 4.5 and DS2 now sleeps in it. The chest of drawers still sits beautifully in DS1s room. He still doesn’t have a wardrobe, as nothing he owns really needs hanging (coats are in a cupboard downstairs), and having not spent a huge amount of money on short-term furniture when he was born, we were open to the idea of buying him the bed he really coveted when he up-sized.

Pushandrun · 22/03/2019 21:50

DO NOT BUY FROM MOKEE. They left us without a bed for our firstborn and we are far from the only ones (see article in the Guardian and the many many one star reviews on trustpilot). Utterly shocking attitude added to this being hands down the most stressful part of our entire pregnancy
