High NT Reading (4.7) at 12 Week Scan - our experience

Hi,

I just wanted to share my experience as I found these message boards a great comfort during a very stressful time.

I'm 28, first pregnancy, was excited to go for my 12 week scan. I lay for 20 mins without the Doctor saying anything, and we started to think something might be wrong. She eventually told us the Nuchal Translucency was 4.7 > considerably higher than the healthy range.

We were in deep shock, escorted past a packed waiting room into a counselling room and told that this was considered very high risk for disability. They took the blood test and said they would be in touch end of the week. I couldn't stop reading about what was "normal" and convinced myself that we had to prepare for the worst but hope for the best.

When we got the phone call, she said our chance for Trisomy 21 (downs syndrome) was 1:85 . She said my blood work was also slightly abnormal. Based on the high NT reading and the blood we were expecting to be told it would be 1:2 chance. She told us next step was to have the harmony blood test.

We booked in for that the following week. Once we arrived the consultant at the hospital recommended we get CVS instead as it tests for more than just the three most common results and also gives a yes/no answer rather than another probability. They scanned us again and the NT had gone down to 3.5, still high but obviously a lot better. The procedure wasn't pleasant but not painful, and the next day it just felt like I'd done too many sit ups. We had a wait of 3 days to find out if the baby had downs syndrome... the answer came back negative. We then had to wait another 5 days to hear about other chromosome disorders. And again, we got the wonderful news that it was negative. We've since had a 16 week scan and everything looks normal.

The reason I'm posting this is.... we felt so convinced by the hospital at the first scan that there was no chance of a healthy baby. And what should have been a lovely experience was just so traumatic. We had weeks of non-stop worry, I became a bit of a hermit, I didn't want to see anyone or talk about it. And after all that stress, we have the best result.

I hope this perhaps could provide some comfort to other couples in our position, as I mentioned I read every single thread ever written on the topic and rarely found an NT score as high as ours.

Hi OP, thank you for sharing your story.

I was in a similar position a couple of years ago with my son. Our odds were given as 1:90 which at the time was terrifying. No-one could or would explain to us how the odds were calculated which I found made it more difficult to cope with.

We decided to go for a Harmony test due to the (slight) risk in the CVS screening test. We had to wait for a fortnight as this was over the Christmas period. Our results eventually came back that our son was healthy, but it was the longest two weeks and worst Christmas I've ever had.

I'm so glad to hear that your tests came back fine, and I wish you a healthy and safe rest of your pregnancy. Thanks
