Going to visit my friend three hours away as she's just had a baby and she's stressing as she hasn't had time to go shopping, has no food, DH is away with work for three days. I'm going to pick her up £30/40 worth of stuff - she did the same for me whilst I was sick so now is my time to return the favour!

I've never had a baby before but want to buy her a few bits (she says he doesn't need anything but actually she doesn't want to be a bother)

Imagine you were a new mum to a 4 week old and someone was going to turn up with £30/40 worth of stuff...

What would you want that someone to turn up with?

Chocolate, bananas, those flapjack bar things, ready meals. If she's breast feeding,I used to have bottled water handy for when I got stuck in the sofa for hours

Chocolate (or food she likes). Things she can open and eat with one hand. A nice 'proprr' meal made for her (and cleaned up!).

A magazine.

Something nice to drink.

Savoury snacks. Everyone brought cake - I felt like my teeth were falling out!

Nice facial cleaning wipes for her? Or nice shower stuff, as you can look after baby while she showers. Not bath stuff though- no time for baths yet!

If you can cook, decent food that you can do some batch cooking with, so that you can fill up the freezer with homemade food. If not, decent quality ready meals - maybe look at m&s or cook?

Stuff like nice bread and cheese for a good quick snack. Take stuff so you can cook for her. Maybe even something like pate that she couldn't eat while pregnant. A few multipacks of crisps and decent cereal bars. Milk. Personally I wouldn't get ready meals if they aren't something she usually has but something of a similar mindset like frozen pizza would be good. And ask which nappies she's using!

Dry shampoo
Hand cream
Mixed fruit / seeds to snack on
Flap jacks / oat biscuits
Individual quiches / something tasty for lunch that you can eat or prep one-handed
A magazine

An offer to wash up / put on or hang out some washing!

Milk, eggs, nice bread, ham/cheese for sandwich filling, fruit, cereal or cake bars, yoghurts, crisps, chocolate, magazine, tea/coffee

M&S Dine In x3 with accompanying wine

Lots of food you can make/eat with one hand! Houmous, crisps, breadsticks, frozen pizza, nice bread - lots of carbs basically.

Essentials such as milk and bread, maybe some fillings for sandwiches such as ham/cheese, good quality ready meals or things she can pop in the oven, even a couple of tubs of the ready made soups you can find in stores that are nice and thick/chunky with some fresh rolls. Just after my son was born i loved granola cookies (look like flapjack squares). A bottle of her favourite kind of drink (diet cola/Fanta or squash). A nice big bag or 2 of crisps (new mums snack alot!).
