Sleepyhead

Hi,

I bought a second hand sleepyhead last week and it was immaculate. However I could feel a very slight ridge in the middle of the mattress when I ran my hands down it, possibly from being stored folded in half.

I washed all parts of the sleepyhead again and put it back together and can still feel the lump across the middle of the mattress. I am wondering whether this happens once they have been washed normally or whether I need to buy a new one?

Any advice would be gratefully received.

Thanks x

NHS advice I think is to always have a brand new mattress for every baby as there's a SIDS risk. The risk is probably tiny but personally I wouldn't have my baby sleeping on any second hand mattress.

I think they might sell parts of the sleepyhead individually.

Thank you. Yes I have thought about just getting a new one. I looked at buying an individual mattress pad but it would cost about 70euros including shipping to uk so may aswell buy new!

The ridge is normal (but annoying!) once you take the cover off and wash it the mattress pad doesn't go back quite as flat. However I do agree about a new mattress for baby. Unless you can actually wash the mattress pad itself?

Yes I’ve washed the mattress pad and tried to dry it flat to get rid of the ridge. It’s only very slight but did wonder if it was normal after washing!

The sleepyhead website says it can be used again as all parts are fully washable.

I guess it may be OK if washed. Hard to say. Lullaby Trust says 2nd hand mattress "brought in from outside the home" may increase risk of SIDs but it doesn't mention if washing resolves that. However I don't think use of secondhand bedding (sheets, sleeping bags, blankets) is advised against (is it?), and I can't really see much difference?

I usedthe pad inside the sleepyhead for baby 2 and have sold it for another baby-it’s fully washable so I don’t think the lullaby trust recommendations are relevant here. Agree it doesn’t go as flat every time you wrestle it into its clean cover. My babies didn’t sleep well despite using the sleepyhead, maybe they are princesses and the bump was their pea!

There is always a fold in ours after washing! I spend ages trying to pull it flat in the cover but there's always a ridge.
