SW Scotland babymoon suggestions

Hi everyone,

I have been thinking about places to go with my husband for a wee romantic night or 2 away before the baby arrives. I live in Kilmarnock and I don't want to go too far.

I have looked at lochside, and Dumfries arms (amongst others) but wondering if anyone has any suggestions of places I haven't thought of. I'm looking for somewhere that's got something special (not just a big standard hotel room) with comfy beds and a nice restaurant. A spa attached would be a bonus.

All suggestions gratefully received. I should note that trump turnberry might be gorgeous but I would never give that man or his family my money :) xx

What about Seamill hydro, the Marine hotel or Lochgreen house

MrsDrambuie · 09/08/2018 06:09

These are not south west but are not far from you - what about Stobo Castle or Barony Castle?

SomebodysNotInBedYet · 09/08/2018 06:30

Stobo is amazing, not too far.

Defender90 · 09/08/2018 06:48

Lochside is beautiful but if there is a wedding on (which there usually is) the place is so busy, we ended up stuck inside for a while as the bride and groom got photos done in the doorway we were stood there in our casual clothes surrounded by people done up to the nines (as my mother would say).

Does it have to be hotel or would you consider self catering a cabin or such?

I was gonna recommend Turnberry too!! Stayed last week & got free upgrade to a suite with an ocean view!! Staff were amazing & food to die for!!

Let go of your politics - it's your babymoon & the man does some hotel! Enjoy xx

Babymoon happens after the baby arrives, and is the cocooning time when the new family hunkers down together to all get used to each other. See new baby manuals from right back to the 1970s!

Please don't take a perfectly good term that remains in continuous use for 50years and apply it to something else.

Are you planning on having a -real babymoon, or just a holiday during pregnancy?

For a babymoon, you are best off staying at home, and planning ahead how you can minimise all household stress, and work out how many visitors are compatible with your cocoon. I always thought it was a bit wrong to ban visitors completely (and to be fair, only those who espoused the most extreme form of babymoon went that far). But avoiding exhaustion form them would be important.

Calm, happy pregnancy of course is useful in setting the best conditions for the post-natal period (whether you and your new baby have a babymoon all together or not) and if a pregnancy holiday is going to make you feel good, then of course you should go for it.

Cally Palace?

WinnieTheWOrm you've been actually quite poorly behaved on this thread and I don't like your tone. You can clearly see I was meaning a night or 2 away BEFORE the baby arrives (because that's what I have written). The only way I've ever heard it used is in the way I have referred to it in my post and I have not deliberately set out to offend you (or anyone else) through misuse of a word. You on the other hand have taken this as an opportunity to be horrible to someone you don't know. This is supposed to be a supportive platform for mums (and I've seen dads too) to ask questions and support each other. Next time you think about having a rant, maybe think again.

I'm now thinking I've maybe over reacted a touch. I still think you were a bit sarcastic but your message wasn't as horrible as o originally read it. Ugh. Just woke up and was totally knocked off guard by your message.

Defender90 I agree about lochside!

Also, we are open to lodges, cabins etc.

Thanks everyone for your suggestions! ;)

Trigony is a lovely hotel not far outside Dumfries. www.trigonyhotel.co.uk

There's also the Corsewall Lighthouse www.lighthousehotel.co.uk

Both do fab food.

It's a beautiful part of Scotland. Enjoy!

Belle20 · 09/08/2018 08:03

OllyBJolly I used to live in Dumfries for a while there so I know exactly where trigony hotel is. I wouldn't have thought of it either. Thanks for the tip. I'll also look up the lighthouse. Xx

In that case I heartily recommend Whitecairn at Glenluce, we go at least twice a year, go in, lock the door and just relax. There are new snugs at Laggan, I've not been but they look gorgeous, expensive and I don't think cooking in is an option but I'm sure there is an onsite resturant, but something to look at when you are browsing suggestions anyway.

Turnberry always looks so good when any of my friends stay, RAD group have taken over Hetland Hall down by Dumfries and think it's undergone a big transformation too, again though - weddings are their target audience, so could encounter same problems as Lochside. Radstone in Lanarkshire too worth a look. They really do know what they are doing when it comes to hotels.

Hope you get a lovely and relaxing break booked.

snowbrigade · 09/08/2018 08:25

Perhaps just me, but I find it really odd that anyone is willing to consider Turnberry given it's association with Trump....

I'd second Stobo Castle, shouldn't be too far away for you! x

Belle20 · 09/08/2018 08:50

Tacks defender90 I'll definitely look into that. We were actually booked in to stay over at Hetland hall for a friend's wedding....but it's now too close to our due date to go that far away from home. I'm gutted!!

Snowbrigade... I'm 100% with you on that one.

I did an overnight stay in culzean castle once which was absolutely amazing (but pricey!) I've also heard the waterside in west kilbride is lovely, especially if you get a sea view room. Or the brisbane hotel in largs x

Belle20 · 09/08/2018 20:36

Yeah they're all good ideas. I'll look into them too. I'm so indecisive..... I'm also wanting to surprise my husband because it'll be near his birthday so I'm trying to search when he's not being nosey x
