Baby box - am I being thick?

I picked up my baby box last week as they’re free in the Wirral as part of a trial scheme. I’m all for using it rather than buying an expensive crib but I can’t get my head around having my baby on the floor next to me. I’d be concerned the duvet might drop over it or I’ll drop a book / glass of water! Plus bending over from the bed to pick baby up will be difficult too. Am I missing something? It does say not to place on a high surface which is logical. My thinking is I’ll use the box to keep sheets in or toys etc but I’d like to understand if the idea really is to keep them on the floor!!

I've wondered this too. Im following.

I guess you put it in bed with you?
Ds sleeps on a baby nest in our bed and it doesn’t feel as risky as him just bring on the mattress.

@CocoDeMoll ThatmMay feel safer and be working for your family, but it is actually against safer sleeping guidelines so I would be wary or recommending it to others!

Sorry! "May" and "wary of"

I think the idea really is to keep them on the floor. I believe they’re used like a Moses basket (without the legs). They are handed out to every mum in countries like Finland and studies suggest much lower rates of cot death.
If you’re worried about spilling water etc. on the baby, you could put it at the end of the bed instead.

I never used mine for night time sleeping. Way too big and cumbersome. Just had it downstairs for day time naps until baby was 8 weeks and was too long for it!

BlueBug45 · 08/08/2018 12:02

I've got one as you can get the basic ones free (or for the cost of delivery) if you do a online course - www.babyboxuniversity.com/

My aim is to use it in the day in my living room, then when the baby is too big to sleep in it to use it as storage.

SiolGhoraidh · 08/08/2018 12:11

I got mine from the same resource as @BlueBug and I intend to keep it downstairs. Saves carting a moses basket up and down the stairs!

I have a large low coffee table, so I will probably put the box on there, as I agree, bending down is probably going to be quite tricky at first.

I think the main concern about putting it on a high surface is making sure it is stable - so no balancing on sofas or the tops of chests of drawers.

Liz3891 · 08/08/2018 12:46

I was planning to use it both for daytime naps downstairs and evening but placed into the cot to avoid having to purchase a smaller crib/moses basket for night time sleeping in the bedroom.

BlueBug45 · 08/08/2018 16:49

@Liz3891 some babies are fine sleeping in their cot from the beginning. Otherwise you can purchase a second hand moses basket cheaply or borrow one. Just make sure you can replace the mattress and do so, plus ensure the covers are washable.
