I think it's really, really common. My friend actually refused the test as she was so frightened of it (with no reason tbh). It would be like being tested for cancer - even if you had no symptoms it is frightening. However, once you get your negative result (which you will) you will feel fantastic! So super-healthy! It's normal to feel this way, but you won't have a bad result.

Oh, yes, totally routine where I live. I remember feeling all hormonal and bursting into tears at Sainsbury's after having it done. But honestly, I'm a journalist who has done features on HIV and really, it is vanishingly rare in women who aren't from Africa or don't use IV drugs. It's normal to worry, but I do have to say the sense of relief and purity (!!) when you get a clear result is rather lovely.

MummyToSteven · 18/08/2004 10:52

Yes, routine where I live too. Agree with Aloha - it is incredibly unlikely that you have it. It is far, far better for HIV+ women to find out when they are PG, as having a C-Section and not bfing dramatically reduces the chances of the baby being HIV+

Mosschops30, OMG this is EXACTLY the way I am feeling, I haven't told DP abnout the test and have even contemplated if I get + not telling him because am sure it would destroy us (how awful is that???)
As the date gets nearer to the results (midwife said she would bring them on the next appointment) I am worrying more and more.
Thought I was the only one and couldn't discuss it with anyone!

Flossam · 18/08/2004 11:16

I had a test done a few years ago, had a sexual health problem (not STD) and went to the GUM clinic. They encouraged you to get tested for all things, which I decided was a good idea. I've never been particularly promiscious (!) but I still worried about it loads. Everything was absolutely fine. This time I had it done, I forgot it had even been sent (still with same partner though). Please don't worry about it too much, but be reassured by the fact that it is perfectly normal to be concerned.

hoxtonchick · 18/08/2004 11:20

It was absolutely routine in inner London to have the test when I was pregnant with ds 3 years ago. Freaked me out slightly that they lost the result, but all was fine. dp was pleased too, meant he had a clean bill of health too!

Mosschops - if you are really anxious, then I would say phone them. Has to be better than waiting? Don't just sit and fret!

mosschops - also routine in West London and this was 3 years ago. When I had my booking in appt for my current pregnancy a few months ago I also had the test done (again) and was panicking too - this despite knowing there was no chance that I had it......it's always a worry. And if you didn't have that to worry about it would be something else!
Hope your mind is put at ease with the phonecall very very soon

beansprout · 18/08/2004 15:25

Mosschops - I would make the call. If you are anything like me, you probably aren't getting much done anyway. And if the worst thing happens, you can just say you feel unwell and go home straight away?

Angeliz · 18/08/2004 15:29

YES!!

I recieve my results next Wednesday and it's like i'm on edge for weeks.
My mam knows i'm worried.
I will be SO glad when it's over and i'm terrified about results!!
If i were you i'd call them and put your mind at rest. WISH i didn't have to wait ANOTHER week!!!

Mosschops - I felt exactly the same and asked my midwife why I need it - she said it was routine and that it was very rare for women who were not drugs users or from africa to get a + result.
I was also worried about whether it would effect life insurance applications(there was a big thing about this when HIV/AIDs was first in the news) but she reassured me that it was a normal screen and that there will be no knock on effect.

Still didn't stop me worrying though - I had to wait 6 weeks for my results - which were all fine.
If you are sitting and worrying pick up the phone and make that call.....

Hi everyone
I had my tests last monday and i was told that they would be in touch by friday at the latest if there was a problem as they got the results back after 48hours. Well it is now Wed the next week and i heard nothing so im guessing everything was fine. I was told that if there were no problems then i would get my results and white notes back at my 20 week scan which is another 2 weeks. I'm sure it would be the same for you, they wouldn't leave you waiting if you had bad news but like everyone says if it will make you feel better than give them a call. HTH

Mosschops - I know this is a difficult one, but the chances are, it's really, really ok. I had to seriously face up to this prospect when I got a call from an ex, telling me he had tested positive. Without wanting to encourage anyone to be reckless, it's actually not transmitted that easily, and so it's really, really likely to be ok.

We will support you in whatever you do, and whatever happens, but please don't put yourself through anymore anxiety than you have to?

Oh good news Mosschops!

In my area they ask you if you want it done, in a kind of "you don't want it do you?" sort of way.

I was hoping to get away without any bloodtests at all this time, on the basis that they found out what they needed to know last time, but apparently your immunity to rubella can change so they want to test that again.

beansprout · 19/08/2004 09:44

That's great news Mosschops, you must be very relieved!
