GTT- HAS anyone ever declined it?

Just as the title says really. This is baby no. 4 and because my mum developed type 1 diabetes late In life I need to have a GTT test again.

As I said this is baby no. 4 so I've had the test with the other three but all came back clear. If I was to refuse the GTT would there be other markers to look out for if I had Gestational Diabetes? Would there be glucose in my urine etc?

I'm really stuck on childcare and honestly they make me feel awful each time I've had the GTT. I'm not a massively sweet eater as I much prefer savoury but I doubt that matters really either.

So has anyone declined it or would I be silly not to have it done?

Thanks in advance for any replies

I’d have it done. I know it’s a pain but you do have that risk factor and the consequences of undetected diabetes in pregnancy are serious. You wouldnt always have glucose in your urine or other signs that would be definitely picked up

huha · 06/08/2018 19:28

You would be silly not to have it done. It can cause pretty serious complications for a simple test that takes only a few hours to complete.

MadameJosephine · 06/08/2018 19:31

I have known women to decline if and of course it is entirely your right to do so. However, the consequences of having undiagnosed gestational diabetes could put both you and your baby at significant risk so I would strongly recommend that you have it done

Mousefunky · 06/08/2018 19:34

Some people have no symptoms. For some it can be detected due to sugar in urine. I had it done last week and I know how shit it made me feel but I’m glad I had it done even though I don’t have GD. The risks caused by undiagnosed GD just aren’t worth it.

SomeKnobend · 06/08/2018 19:44

I had to decline it this pregnancy since you can't use Lucozade anymore, you have to use their own glucose pouch, which is so rank, I can't keep it down. I have tried but I just vomit it up every time and then they can't do the bloody test!

I don't think I have it anyway this time as no symptoms but am sticking to a fairly low GI diet just in case which is what I was advised before. In a previous pregnancy I had it, I was starving and thirsty all the time, fucking huge, polyhydramnios, baby was big (1/3 bigger than the previous one), big weight gain. I don't have any of that this time.

BlueBug45 · 06/08/2018 19:48

How close was baby number 3? I know people who have declined it because previous baby was about 14 months or less older. They also only didn't have a relation who has/had diabetes so their one risk factor was something else such as age or ethnic origin.

Soontobemumof4 · 06/08/2018 19:50

Thanks for the replies, you've put what I thought. Looks like DS who will be 20 months old will be coming with me and I'll see if I can get someone to drop the other two at school and preschool.

I absolutely struggled to keep my sugars down in one pregnancy to the point of hospitalization but was not diab at all with the other. So i would def get it done!

Poptart4 · 06/08/2018 19:57

My mum also developed diabetes later in life so im always tested for gd when im pregnant. My first 3 pregnancies i didn't have it but this time, my 4th pregnancy, i do have it.

Its definitely worth having the test. There are many side effects to having gd. The worst being still birth.

Take the test.

BirthdayKake · 06/08/2018 19:59

I declined it when pregnant with no. 4. I have tiny babies, I'm small myself, and there was no way I could go that long without eating!

My dad had developed diabetes later in life which was why they wanted me to do it. The baby was fine.

FireAndRain45 · 06/08/2018 20:43

I declined mine. Because my dad is unknown they said I should have one, but he was a sperm donor so I think they would have checked he wasn't diabetic at the hospital before he donated.

I feel sick and so faint if I don't eat for a couple of hours so I doubt I'd make it through, plus I get really anxious in hospital so the whole thing would be a nightmare for me.

I said that if I developed any symptoms or got protein in my wee I'd go in for one straight away and my midwife said it was fine

Grasshopper123 · 06/08/2018 21:22

I declined twice out of four pregnancies...the last two. I've no family history and never developed it in pregnancy, had smallish babies but my BMi put me in the bracket for it. I also had severe sickness and found the testing process horrendous, especially as they generally struggled to take bloods as my veins had sunk, so I was incredibly bruised afterwards.

I did discuss it at length with the midwives and also did plenty of research. My decline of consent was taken respectfully in my 3rd pregnancy, but not so much my forth (different hospital).

starday · 06/08/2018 21:56

I had it done 4 times and yes it was so horrible and yes juggling children was horrendous but it's with it - just in case

Dreamingofkfc · 06/08/2018 22:10

Where I work, if you do not have a GTT when you have risk factors, and the baby is born big then the baby would be recommended to be commenced on the hypoglycemic pathway, meaning a hospital stay of 24-37 hours and the baby having heel prick tests. What sizes were your others?

PaintBySticker · 06/08/2018 22:15

Why would you want to? It’s a couple of hours out of your time. I was diagnosed with GD in my first pregnacy after a urine test showed glucose at 32 and then a GTT diagnosed GD by the time I was 34 weeks. Blood sugar is really high before it shows in urine. I wish I’d had a GTT earlier. My baby was fine in the end (not big but born at 38 weeks so that probably helped) but he struggled with his blood sugar levels in the days following his birth and maybe that could have been avoided.

PaintBySticker · 06/08/2018 22:17

“protein in my wee“ - is that an indicator of diabetes? Glucose surely?

CantankerousCamel · 06/08/2018 23:11

I declined it.

There is such a lack of understanding of what constitutes ‘safe’ and ‘unsafe’ numbers. I just couldn’t be arsed

mrbloomscauliflower · 06/08/2018 23:55

I declined it as had HG

Vampyress · 07/08/2018 02:06

To the person mentioning protein in wee, that isn't a sign of gestatinal diabetes but pre eclampsia (if past 20 weeks) which is very different but extremely serious also.

Nat6999 · 07/08/2018 02:44

I declined it, they only wanted to do it because of my BMI, my DS was always the right size for week of pregnancy so I refused.

Rinceoir · 07/08/2018 08:19

Studies have actually shown that risk factor prediction for GD isn’t fantastic. The only people very unlikely to have it are Caucasian women, under 25 with bmi under 25. So many units are moving to universal screening. It’s not pleasant I know, but it’s just one morning and it’s done. Undiagnosed GD can cause major problems (and is more likely in later pregnancies as you are older each time).

Soontobemumof4 · 07/08/2018 10:59

Thanks for the replies, you've all said what I thought. I'll just take snacks and toys and hope the smallest two (realised there's no preschool that day) keep happy enough for the 3 hours I'll be there.

I can't remember who asked but my babies were 6lb, 7.5lb and 7.13lb and never made it to 40 weeks with any of them.
