Still no pattern at 29 weeks

I’m getting stressed because he still doesn’t have a pattern at 29+3...he moves everyday and so far I haven’t had to go in for reduced movements once.
The only time that seems consistent is first thing in the morning. Other than that, it’s all over the place. Yesterday he moved so much in the afternoon, my tummy was moving all over and it was quite uncomfortable. Other afternoons, he’ll only move a little. Evenings are also changeable, some evenings he’ll move lots and others, like last night, I can only feel a bit of movement now and again. It’s really annoying. I will mention it to my Midwife at my next appointment.
I never really go more than 2 hours without feeling him, which is reassuring.

Anyone else in the same boat?

I'm 31 weeks and still no pattern. I wouldn't worry, as long as the baby is moving. If there is a dramatic change you will notice.

BlueBug45 · 06/08/2018 15:22

I'm 35 weeks and no pattern.

I’m 37 weeks, a midwife and still not 100% sure what having a pattern is supposed to look like! I know that it is abnormal for my baby not to have moved for an hour or so, but I also know that if I go and lie down and put a hand on my bump, I’ll likely feel him so I’m happy as long as that works.

I go by the RCOG guidelines:

Pattern? I don’t think this was a thing when I last gave birth 5 years ago. They just keep adding meaningless things for pregnant women to obsess over.

GetThisBabyOut · 06/08/2018 15:49

@YellowDesk I think the problem is that women were ignoring reduced movement or putting it down to babies ‘running out of room’ and unfortunately this was leading to some adverse outcomes for babies. Initially women were told to count their kicks but it’s been proven that different women will feel a different number of movements and what is normal for one is not normal for another. However, this does seem to have led to a really alarmist attitude to fetal movements generally and causes a lot of anxiety for women on the whole in my experience. Women get very scared when they haven’t felt anything for a little while, when they have simply been busy for example! They then skip the ‘go and lie on your side and monitor the movements’ advice and go straight to panicking.

Mousefunky · 06/08/2018 16:00

There’s never a set pattern, you just have to learn what is normal for your baby. You would realise if their movements dramatically reduced.

BridgeFarmKefir · 06/08/2018 16:02

My baby doesn't have a very obvious pattern but I think it's about knowing what is roughly normal. She kicks to wake me up, will have a good kick when I'm going to bed and then will have a shuffle around if I've been sedentary for a while (I've just been sat on a train for 2 hours so felt her a fair bit)

Use your instincts I guess - l get the impression that (as when they're out the womb) they'll do their own thing! Smile

I’m on my third pregnancy and have never had a determinable pattern. Just like newborns, they aren’t always asleep and awake at the same time every day.

hammeringinmyhead · 06/08/2018 17:47

I'm 26 weeks and don't have one either. He kicks me around 7am which wakes me up and often sometime in the evening but during the day it can be 11am, lunchtime, 3pm. I figure as long as I can feel him every few hours that's fine!

SJP164 · 06/08/2018 19:17

32 weeks and no pattern! They tell you to lie down for half and hour and monitor it but I would just fall asleep! As long as your feeling the baby often I think this is fine.

beccii161016 · 06/08/2018 19:32

My DS never had any type of pattern at all! In fact he worried us sick sometimes as he'd have days where he'd constantly move and really lazy days where I wouldn't feel him for hours on end!

If you're ever concerned that baby isn't moving regularly go and get checked. A pattern isn't the main thing to look for just regular movements from baby right up until your due date. They don't stop moving because they "run out of room" but they may change slightly from kicks to sort of a rolling feeling Smile

theruffles · 06/08/2018 19:34

I don't think I had a regular pattern until I was about 33 weeks. I was just glad to feel my LO move as I got very anxious something was wrong if I hadn't felt her kick noticeably for a while. I would sometimes make a tally of how many times I'd felt her move/kick in an hour and it would help put my mind at ease.

surreygirl1987 · 07/08/2018 08:11

32 weeks and no pattern. Even if there was one I probably wouldn't notice- surely it depends on what you're doing that day, ie drinking cold drink or going for a swim etc? I find there's things he often responds to rather than a pattern.

hammeringinmyhead · 07/08/2018 10:39

I do find it a bit annoying when the advice is to lie down for ages. I can't just disappear for half an hour at work! My midwife just says a cold drink while sitting should do it.
