Baby aspirin in pregnancy

Hello, I really hope some of you ladies can help me as I'm so confused as to what you do for the best. Unfortunately I've had two miscarriages in the last year & due to the stress of it I had some blood tests done to rule out anything obvious. One of the three clotting tests came back high. My GP said I don't need to do anything differently as only one is high but I emailed a private NHS consultant for a second opinion who replied to say take low-dose aspirin if get pregnant again. I told this to my GP who said doing this could be dangerous which is obviously not what I want. I'm so conflicted as to what's best to do but I just can't bear the thought of going through a third miscarriage especially if taking aspirin could have prevented it. Would love to hear if anyone has taken aspirin after getting a positive pregnancy test. Thank you x

My understanding is low dose aspirin can help blood flow in ladies at risk of preeclampsia for example.

I am currently on low dose aspirin as instructed by my consultant (16 weeks currently) - I had a Low PAPP A result and it was upon getting this I was advised to take it.

It's worth speaking to your ante natal care providers rather than GP.

I had 3 late miscarriages before safely delivering my daughter. With her, I took baby aspirin from the day I got a spike in my ovulation kit until about a week before my c section. This was on the advice of the miscarriage clinic consultant as they suspected Hughes Syndrome in pregnancy (where tiny clots block the placenta) but couldn't confirm. Good luck.

Thank you for replying Patienceofatoddler. Can I just ask did you start the low-dose aspirin as soon as you got a positive pregnancy test in the first trimester? & is it 75mg? I think you're right about speaking to an antenatal care provider, I just want to make the right decision & am driving myself crazy reading into everything.

It was standard practice to take it at my fertility clinic. I took the 75 dose throughout, stopping when advised before my section.

Thank you so much for replying WhodidyousayIshouldbe. I'm sorry to hear about your late m/cs but congrats on your rainbow baby. Was that also 75mg of low-dose aspirin? I can't find anything saying that low dose would be harmful to a baby so think I should try it like the consultant advised but after speaking to the GP I'm doubting what to do.

Oh really eurochick, that's good to know. Was that a private clinic you went to?

Not ivf, but i had my first child at 40 and as a "geriatric mum" (!) it was standard to be prescribed low dose aspirin.

I was advised to take low does aspirin when pregnant with DD2 after placenta abruption with DD1. I was told it helped increase blood flow to the placenta to make it healthier. When your pregnant again I would talk to your midwife. They will refer you to a consultant. My GP told me to stop taking aspirin at 36 weeks but my consultant told me right up until delivery. I asked my midwife and she said always listen to the consultant

WhodidyousayIshouldbe · 04/08/2018 12:12

It was 75mg bought at the supermarket pharmacy. I distinctly recall the Consultant saying that our couldn't do any harm to take it and might help so it was worth a try. It was 11 years ago so if course advice may be different these days. days

There are a few threads on the miscarriage board about aspirin so you might get more recent anecdotal evidence from there too. My view is that a specialist is more likely than a GP to know what's best but you can only go with your own instinct in the end.

My 4lb 6oz rainbow baby is a 10 year old long limbed, fit as a fiddle, strong willed and fleet of foot athlete these days Wink

Starlight127 · 04/08/2018 12:13

Oh really, that's good to know, was that from a positive pregnancy test throughout the whole pregnancy?

Gp’s often give out terrible advise in pregnancy. Baby aspirin is not dangerous unless you have a specific health condition that would make it so.

Aria2015 · 04/08/2018 12:16

My doctor told me that low dose aspirin doesn't hurt and is worth a shot. I took it after two miscarriages and had a healthy pregnancy. I took it throughout the pregnancy. I think higher dose aspirin can be harmful but baby aspirin is so low in dose its ok. You can even have a section when on it because although it thins the blood its not to the degree that you’d bleed excessively.

Starlight127 · 04/08/2018 12:18

Thank you bunnyrabbit93 & WhodidyousayIshouldbe. I agree a Consultant should know more & hopefully I get pregnant again & my midwife will refer me to one. Good idea, I'll also take a look on the other thread too.

I only took it from 14 weeks once I had my results following 12 week scan.

But thinking about it I took it from knowing I was pregnant with 1st after being advised by a closw family friend who was a consultant obstetrician (now retired) I think it is quite routinely given for a number of higher risk pregnancies and also larger woman who may be more at risk of high blood pressure / preeclampsia? Blush I think - I am not medically trained obviously.

I would definitely speak to your specific ante natal care team as GP's are not experts in the field.

Patienceofatoddler · 04/08/2018 12:59

Sorry yes 75mg with both pregnancies. Blush

purplestrawberry2 · 04/08/2018 19:03

I am taking aspirin 75mg because im having twins and its to keep the blood flowing around the placenta (I am told!)

BlueBug45 · 04/08/2018 20:45

As PPs said you need to speak to a consultant rather than a GP, as the consultant will be a specialist in the area.

My GP had to check with the consultant why I was being advised to take low dose aspirin.

There was a post on I think this forum where a woman at risk of m/c was told not to take aspirin due to her medical history by a consultant.

This is why you need to seek a specialist's advice.

Starlight127 · 04/08/2018 23:58

Thank you ladies for all your replies, it's good to hear your experiences. It's so frustrating not being able to be referred to a specialist until three miscarriages, just the two I've had have taken such an emotional toll that I still find it hard to cope with. I am grateful the consultant replied back to me even though she didn't have to (I don't feel like I can keep asking her things though as I'm not really 'eligible' to see her & my GP said as it was off the record they can't take her advice). Unfortunately we can't afford to go private but maybe if I get pregnant again my midwife might be able to help me speak to a consultant as my gut feeling is just to try the low dose aspirin.

I would take advise from a consultant. I’ve had three miscarriages and an ectopic. Unknown causes. This time I was placed on 75mgs of aspirin and I’m now 29 weeks. Honestly I’m not sure your GP would know and it’s very common practice with ladies who have miscarried. A friend of mine is on claxane injections because of clotting issues. Consultants take it seriously. Good luck op. Xx
