Hi all, just wondering what your thoughts on lavender essential oil? Not sure if I can use it? Only just found out I'm pregnant, and normally put a drop of lavender on a tissue if feeling a bit anxious.

I was told I couldn't have lavender essential oil whilst in labour as the midwife assigned to me was pregnant (I hadn't asked for it, but they offered then changed their minds!)

I had used various things with lavender in whilst pregnant though, as it had never crossed my mind to even check...

Thanks laelti 😊 it's so confusing! It's not something I would have thought twice about but just stumbled across an article about essential oils.

Hey. When I gave birth to my son the midwife out lavender essential oil in the birth pool. I'm due in 2 days and at last appointment I asked if I could use it again, my midwife said yes but I had to bring my own and labour in pool and give birth outside the pool (as done before) so it must be fine. At a previous appointment I had mentioned it and midwife said I would need to have a midwife trained in aromatherapy if I brought my own how vee it was my choice.

Two diff midwifes two diff answers but I'm taking it anyway.

I should have said - I was told the risk with it is a chance of causing contractions - so it was fine for someone in labour but not recommended for someone pregnant - the midwife was only 20 weeks (she left to have her scan halfway through!).

I'd used a lavender pillowspray most of my third trimester and went 4 days over though!

I was told to avoid essential oils in the first trimester.

After that I was told ylang ylang, jasmine and lavender are fine.

Told to avoid rosemary at all costs, clarey sage and juniper. All can cause pre-term contractions.

Thanks ladies, appreciate the responses, I’ll have to find another way to chill myself out if I feel anxious!

I think it’s fine after the first trimester. I’m 29 weeks and using it. X
