Hello

Please could you advise which test is the best to have for Down, Plautau, Edwards when pregnant and where you would recommend to do it? Thank you so much

There's the standard trisomy test you'll be offered alongside your 12 week scan, but I believe there are other tests - such as Harmony - you can pay for. I think Harmony is about £500. I just had the NHS test and was low risk so didn't feel the need to dig into my results. If you felt you wanted more detail/ reassurance you might want to pay.

If you're asking for what is best and are not worried about finances, NIPT is the one. Me and DP had NIPT as well as NHS screening as our risk shot up after the 20 week scan. It's the most accurate and gave us the best peace of mind.

Thanks! is the NIPT the harmony test or the Panorama one?

I don't mind paying and I will go privately.

Have the test for tuberous sclerosis if you can.

OuchToday · 03/08/2018 17:35

@emmyself they are both considered NIPT I believe. My consultant was the one who suggested this to me. Your midwife should be well aware of what NIPT is as there will definitely be someone at the hospital who does. I phoned ARC who were really helpful. They explained exactly how it worked, which one had fastest turnaround, which was most accurate and were generally a very comforting source. Best of luck!

How long does it take for the results to come back. My friend says hers came back within days but I'm still waiting two weeks on. I'm starting to get anxious my mid wife is holding back the bad new 😢

LlamaPyjamas · 03/08/2018 22:34

I had Harmony and paid £200. I believe Panorama is basically the same. Results took about two weeks.

BertieBotts · 03/08/2018 22:36

Panorama tests for more conditions than Harmony so might be worth it if you want more of an array done. Depending on which options are offered, anyway.

Jemchal it will depend which test you've had, which lab your midwife has sent the test to and how busy they are (and she is) - two weeks is not a concern but you can call her and ask for an update, if you have a number for her.

Jemchal · 03/08/2018 22:39

Thank you Bertiebotts I think I'm being rather impatient. I will give her a call Monday morning.

BlueBug45 · 03/08/2018 22:40

@Jemchal some maternity departments are absolutely rubbish in returning test results in a timely fashion so chase them up. However normally if there is something wrong they will contact you by phone asap.

Jemchal · 03/08/2018 22:45

Thank you BlueBug45 😁

Sandstormbrewing · 03/08/2018 23:06

Got told mine would be 2-3 weeks if ok result, 4 days if not. Got mine returned in a week with great odds.

Personally I'd have the Tri test offered by the NHS then get an NIPT done if you aren't happy with those results.

BlueBug45 · 04/08/2018 00:44

@Sandsstormbrewing all the test results I have, have the date of the test printed on them and on the accompanying letter. Yet for some of the results it takes nearly a month before they are sent out to me.

I had the NHS test for downs etc and it came back as high risk. We then decided to have the IONA test done (similar to harmony) to avoid having an invasive test. I’m so pleased we did as I came back as 1 in a million for all 3, not high risk at all! I would definitely recommend getting this done instead of the NHS one as the worry and stress is just not worth it. It’s cost us just under £400 and it’s the best money we’ve spent! Good luck!

emmyself · 07/08/2018 16:46

@lottie018 and @LlamaPyjamas where did you have your tests done please?

I had mine done with the Midwife Company Ltd... the midwife is called Helen, based in Manchester and she was fantastic! I can’t recommend her enough. She went through everything clearly, fully explaining the process, where everything is tested etc and kept us up to date after too. She is a midwife at one of the Manchester hospitals, but you either go to her house or she goes to you depending on location. Our results came through after 4 days but she always says a week to be safe.

LlamaPyjamas · 07/08/2018 22:06

Mine was done at a private clinic recommended by the hospital. At the time (a year ago) the hospital didn’t offer the test itself. Since then many hospitals have started to offer the test, free for high risk women and for a fee if you’re not high risk.

wimbler · 08/08/2018 11:10

I had the harmony test done through the Kings Hospital in london research program. They offer it to anyone who gets a risk of less than 1:500 after the combined screening as they are currently doing an extensive research program. My risk was 1:484 and normally this is still considered low risk and wouldn't normally fall into a category of needing further testing. after the test my results came back as 1:10,000 so it really is more accurate and although I got a test I didn't really need , it did put my mind at ease

My advice would be to see how your NHS testing goes before looking into spending all the money on a private test. If your results from the NHS one come back as V low risk, you wont need to spend on testing you don't need.
