I m 29 weeks and every evening going into the night I get awful heartburn, it keeps me up all night and I almost feel like I have to spew with it,, I try keeping cold water at the side of my bed but it literally gives me 2ins of relief then I m reaching for it again! And obviously drinking so much water makes me need a pee constantly so it's a visious cycle,
Has anyone got any good home remedies, I d rather not take medicine like gaviscon or that, but I m getting desperate

Thanks xx

My gp prescribed omeprazole. It stopped heartburn pretty instantly for me and made pregnancy so much easier. It stops the overproduction of acid.
I know you said your avoiding drugs but if it's affecting you that much, maybe look into it.
Gaviscon or chalky based food (like love heart sweets or mints) only worked for me for a few minutes after I consumed them. Then it was back to tasting acid and was unbearable lying down.

I had this, don't suffer it's fixable
You can get ranitidine from the go, this will almost definitely solve it, safe while pregnant
Also gaviscon
Try not eating after 6pm and sleep slightly propped up

I had terrible heartburn when pregnant. I virtually lived on Gaviscon. A good swig of it after every meal, and whenever needed. It did no harm at all and saved my sanity.

Don't be too anti medicines in pregnancy. Just take your GP's advice. If you need them you need them. There are several good and safe remedies that can be prescribed.

Second the omeprazole. I had horribly heartburn with my first and was truly miserable for weeks, couldn’t sleep, couldn’t eat etc etc.

Midwife kept fobbing me off until my 36 week check, until a different one said all casually, ‘oh, just call your GP and they’ll prescribe you something.’ Grr.

Reader1984 · 29/07/2018 05:40

Gaviscon. I drink loads of it!

ourkidmolly · 29/07/2018 05:43

Nothing wrong with Gaviscon whilst pregnant, the lack of sleep is far worse for a healthy pregnancy. Peppermint cordial is good too. Neat swigs.

daisiesinherfootsteps · 29/07/2018 06:09

Water can actually make it worse. Try milk.

You may have reasons for being anti-medication but as others have said there are plenty safe options for heartburn as it's so common in pregnancy. I suffered through this with DD1 with just Rennies tablets and could barely eat for the last month. She was quite small at birth. With Dd2 I had a different consultant who prescribed ranitidine and I could eat normal meals. She was a healthier weight and baby. Anecdotal but even for you own comfort and sanity the drugs are safe.

And the heatburn vanishes the second you give birth Smile

Gaviscon, and plenty of it!!

Drogonssmile · 29/07/2018 06:40

Omeprazole was the only thing that helped me. Bloody brilliant stuff. Heartburn is horrendous, I feel your pain Thanks

Flatwhite32 · 29/07/2018 06:43

I had awful heartburn in pregnancy. Like other posters, Omeprazole was the only thing that worked. It's safe to take it in pregnancy (I have just fed my week old daughter!).

astoundedgoat · 29/07/2018 07:00

Gaviscon Advance is the only way. The regular stuff just didn't cut it for me.

Grumpos · 29/07/2018 08:20

Rantitide works for me, I had a few weeks of really bad heartburn but it’s settled now. Gaviscon didn’t really do much for me so I was advised rather than keep trying it to just take a rantitide when I needed it. They last 24 hours so you’re not popping pills all day long but they work within about 20 minutes and really do help.
I’ve really only taken that and the odd paracetamol through pregnancy, honestly would have been miserable without it, the lack of sleep will do you in!
A home remedy my auntie told me was to boil some water, let it cool then sip it. I never tried it but worth a go.

Nolagerformethanks · 29/07/2018 08:26

I second the gaviscon advance! But OP please don't be to anti medication in pregnancy, we wouldn't be prescribed heartburn medications if they would cause any major problems! You will feel so much better and hopefully the next 11 weeks won't seem as long! I hope you are feeling better soon, it must be awful.

Topseyt · 29/07/2018 09:31

Milk may help at the time, but is often short term as once in the stomach it actually turns from being fairly alkaline to being very acidic.

Gaviscon worked for me, and during labour and delivery I was given ranitidine.

Meganc559 · 29/07/2018 10:57

Thank you so much to every one that's replied, I really appreciate it,, I think I am gunna have to bite the bullet as maybe take something for it as I feel like I cant eat anything,, thanks again lovelys xx

You can buy ranitidine 75mg over the counter (150mg is safe but should be the prescribed). I was on the higher dose stuff when I had hyperemesis earlier on but 75mg usually works for me now as long as I take it religiously. I still go through a pack of gaviscon double action every couple of days though!

AndWhat · 29/07/2018 17:34

I lived on the gaviscon tablets with horrendous heartburn during pregnancy. Not needed to touch the stuff since DS arrived 4 months ago, it literally disappeared after labour.
He did have a full head of hair too!

kikibo · 29/07/2018 17:57

My ob advised doing what regular people with heartburn are advised to do: i.e. eat smaller portions more often so your stomach doesn't get too full, try milk (not for me because I don't drink it), see what triggers heartburn and stay away from it, don't eat spicy or acidic food (that wasn't the cause for me, thank God). I suppose you could add sleeping propped up to that list as well.

I never had it too bad, but I did have to switch from yoghurt to fresh cheese in the morning, as yoghurt gave me horrendous heartburn. I did have Gaviscon (smallest portion) on the side but didn't have to use it. IMO dietary changes are better.
Where we are doctors do not readily prescribe stuff to pregnant women and only do so if strictly necessary/as a last resort. .

Purplestorm83 · 29/07/2018 18:27

I find that eating stodgy food helps as it seems to settled the stomach - e.g. toast, jacket potato, pasta (but not with tomato sauce as too acidic) rice etc. I also practically live on gaviscon at the moment!

Slumberparty · 29/07/2018 20:18

Ugh I've had really horrendous heartburn a few times this pregnancy so far. Sometimes gaviscon works sometimes not. The other day it did actually make me throw up but then the heartburn was gone instantly so it was almost worth it!!
