Unexpected Consultant Appointment, feeling really anxious

Hi all,
Feeling really anxious as I've had a letter referring me to a consultant. Hospital say I need to speak to midwife but she's not available until next week so I know i'll spend the weekend wondering what's wrong.
First pregnancy, first baby, 15 weeks currently, 26y/o. 12 week scan was all fine, combined results for DS/P&E all normal. 20 week scan booked for end of the month, 16 week appointment booked with midwife. Normal BMI, no previous medical conditions. I don't understand what could be wrong. Is there something in my blood maybe? But they took that at 10 weeks shouldn't they have known by now and told me if it was my bloods? I used to smoke but that's all I can think of, had mild depression about 10 years ago due to specific work related issues. Can't see these things being enough to call me in. I stupidly looked up the consultant i'm down to see and says she specialises in abnormal pregnancies / high risk pregnancies?! So obviously panic levels go through the roof. Help? :/

That's so rubbish, they should have told you! Can't shed any light I'm afraid, hopefully someone else will be able to.

Sorry to hear you're going through this. It's completely unacceptable that no one has told you why you've been referred. Pregnancy is such an anxious time anyway! All I can think of is because you've previously smoked maybe they want to check for risk of DVT/blood clots. Does anyone in your immediate family have a history of heart problems or blood clots? Or have you mentioned wanting a planned C-section?

There must be a number you can call to speak to a midwife. Check the front of your notes for a number for the community midwives office or triage. They should have access to your notes and be able to fill you in - I'd push for an explanation.

In the meantime try not to worry too much, if you're fit and healthy and your scans have been normal I'm sure everything's fine.

Could you ring the hospital and ask? It would probably put your mind at rest. FWIW my hospital had me see a consultant after totally normal growth scans and monitoring following two episodes of reduced movement. I was really worried about it, but the consultant was fantastic. I’m still under ML care.

Thank you all. Hospital won't tell me anything they say it's the midwife who's referred me and I need to speak to her. I am at work and don't have my note pack with the blooming midwife numbers on it, but struggling to get out of office to make calls anyway. Probably why i'm so anxious i feel like i can't do anything about it! :( No history to be concerned about, i'd say i'm completely normal I'm not high risk in any way I can think of.

Also, I have been asked to take a urine sample to the appointment. Is this normal?

I had an unexpected consultant appointment that even my midwife wasn't sure what it was for. It turned out it was because of the amount of blood I lost in my previous labour so they've put measures in place to try and prevent it from happening this time round. I wouldn't worry too much about it. And yes, a urine sample is normal same as any ante-natal appointment.

Peachy92 · 27/07/2018 12:10

Managed to track down midwife number, called and she doesn't know off the top of her head what it is (she was driving) and asked me if it was 1st pregnancy / any previous issues etc etc. No no no no no to all questions. So she has made a note to check her notes but won't be until 7 tonight she says. So it'll be a day of waiting. She said there must be a reason as they avoid consultant appointments unless absolutely necessary.... so not sure that helped to be honest :/ Hope I have low iron or something and that's all it is..

Have you ever had any treatment on your cervix? Any history of eating issues? I was referred for both of those, so not quite baby related, I'd had some dodgy cells removed from my cervix

Hjkillas · 27/07/2018 13:42

I hope maybe it's something minor or she misread something which made her refer you.
I would be panicking aswell.. I'm sure it's fine and whatever it is, if you do need a consultant atleast you'll get the best help with whatever it is.
Good luck for tonight (make sure you pester her later she'll probably forget) x

Peachy92 · 27/07/2018 15:01

Nope, none of those either :( Only had 1 pap as i'm 26 and that was all normal in January. I'm a boring / nothing every wrong/ don't even get colds kind of person, so really hoping it's nothing. Thank you guys i'm glad it's not just me being silly! I will certainly come back and let you know once I know x

@Peachy92

Hope you get some clarity. And just to confirm, they usually ask for urine samples at most antenatal appointments from this point on. They tend to check your blood pressure as standard too.

Peachy92 · 27/07/2018 15:22

Ah ok, I haven't had to give urine yet so was thinking there might be something they need to compare to bloods! But definitely feeling a bit reassured after coming on here. At least now i know it's not guaranteed bad news!

Sometimes they like to see you if you have any history of mental health problems. I have a past history of mild depression/anxiety so my midwife referred me in to see the consultant who specialises in mental health problems in pregnancy. It was really just a routine thing to check that I was happy, didn’t need any extra support and knew who to speak to if I found myself struggling.

He discharged me back to midwife led care but said I could ask to be seen again by him at any point if I wanted to. I think they are just trying to be proactive about mental health in pregnancy which is good.

Peachy92 · 27/07/2018 19:04

Thanks so much all for your past experiences and responses it's crazy how different the care given can be. Midwife has called and confirmed it's because my husband has an iron condition which can be hereditary so that's all it is! Panic over thanks again for getting me through today x

Glad it’s nothing too serious. And yes, take a urine sample to every appointment from now on in!

PerfectlyPosed · 27/07/2018 21:07

Glad you've got to the bottom of it and good that they're looking out for you.

Hjkillas · 27/07/2018 21:52

Aww, that's a relief OP xx

NCPuffin · 27/07/2018 22:02

Glad you've got an answer! I was going to say that my consultant specialises in repairing vaginal prolapses, which certainly made me raise an eyebrow (and seemed a bit premature, seeing as I was 16 weeks with my first pregnancy when I first saw her).
