Hi I was just wondering if anyone else has had the same issue..i went to my dr 5 weeks after giving birth for the pill, this was before my 6 week check up as I was very clear i didn't want another baby lol (I had a really tough pregnancy) my dr was a very young lady who was under the impression i couldn't get pregnant anyway as I was breastfeeding ( Which im sure we all know isnt accurate) she spent 15mins skimming through a medical book then went away to consult with another dr she then prescribed me 5mg norithesterone to be taken once a day at the same time. I started getting random spotting the other day and started googling if that was normal while taking the pill correctly and found online that norethisterone is a period delay drug and that you need to use contraception while taking this! I cant see anything online saying it works as a contraception! My daughter is now 4 months old and I stopped breastfeeding at 3 months due to being very unwell. I'm really angry cant get a dr app until next week not sure what to do, had anyone else been prescribed this as a contraception?

If you fully breastfeed then it’s a pretty effective contraception.

I stopped breastfeeding 6 weeks ago and even when I was breastfeeding my periods had started up again

That's not contraception
What planet is this doctor on? I swear some of just think women are baby making machines, thinking " it doesn't MATTER if she has an unwanted pregnancy".

Go back, complain, have words with Practice Manager. Gah. Gives me the rage.

It isn't clear from your post whether the doctor you saw was a trainee or a locum. If so it makes it easier for you to get an on the day emergency appointment due to a prescribing mistake. It would also help you if you can remember the doctor's name.

Regardless go back to the practice in person, talk to reception and make it very clear that doctor has prescribed you the wrong medication so you need to see another GP asap to have the mistake rectified. If the receptionist isn't helpful firmly ask when the practice manager is available so you can see them.

I was prescribed the wrong medication by a locum and immediately got an appointment as soon as I noticed. Talking to a couple of GPs I know sorting out locum and sometimes trainee mistakes is normal. (Trainees are far less likely to make prescribing mistakes as they are supervised.)

Use condoms or abstain for a week then go see another Dr?

Mama2017 · 27/07/2018 05:19

You can just go to any clinic rather than going through your doctor.

Armygirl · 27/07/2018 06:44

Norethisterone is used as a progesterone only pill but in a bigger dose than 5mg if my memory is correct.
I would do a pregnancy test, use condoms until you are seen but as it’s a drug error I would contact the practice manager and demand to be seen ASAP. Good luck

I’ve just double checked the dosage. We give out micronor or norgeston (both norethisterone) as a contraceptive pill but the dosage is 350mcg so yes you’ve been given a bigger dose at 5mg per day. It’s the same drug but it looks like the doctor has prescribed the wrong dose.

mummabubs · 27/07/2018 06:55

I'm on this (brand name Noriday) and also 350mg as contraception. I've not been told to use additional contraception and have been on this now for 8 months. I've even been back to have it represcribed by a different doctor and again wasn't told to use additional contraception at all. The only thing they mentioned is that in order for it to be effective you have to remember to take it within the same 3 hour window every day.

eeanne · 27/07/2018 06:57

BF women are usually prescribed progesterone only pills. I’m on Noriday myself. I think Google is not your friend, but get a follow up to be sure you have the right dose.

mummabubs · 27/07/2018 06:58

(I was also prescribed for the same reason- I have a 9 month old and didn't want 2 under 2!!) 🙈 As a poster above has suggested you probably just need a different dosage).
