What did they say about the size at your appointment?

CathyandHeathcliff · 25/07/2018 21:54

Here are the measurements in comparison to my 20 week scan.

I mean did they comment on whether it was exceptionally big/likely to cause an issue?

ItsLikeRainOnYourWeddingDay · 25/07/2018 21:55

Why on earth didn't you ask if you were worried?

As for the weight, according to the graph your baby is in the normal projections.

Try not and worry so much. If there was an issue they would tell you.

CathyandHeathcliff · 25/07/2018 21:56

@SoyDora I’ve got to have a GD test but the consultant was very blunt and didn’t make me feel at ease.
My midwife today said he was measuring fine, just a bit big and if he carries on the way he’s going, he’ll be a very healthy baby, which made me feel a bit better.

Sounds fine then, graph shows he’s within the normal range!

rainbowlou · 25/07/2018 21:57

I needed a scan at 37 weeks and I was told the baby already weighed 8lb, I was absolutely terrified at how big she would be!
She arrived on her due date and weighed 6lb 9ozGrin
Needless to say nothing I bought her fitted! I hope this is the case with you xx

And the other chart

The 20week measurements look fine? What were todays?
My dd measured normal on all those thins till about 30weeks then they all worried about fetal growth restriction (because my bump was small, but refused to scan her) she turned out heavier than expected 6lb 2oz and perfectly fine
So long as Dr's think you're okay then don't worry. They pile on the pounds the last months x

BrazzleDazzleDay · 25/07/2018 21:59

Ime they're not very accurate. My "really big" baby turned out to be 3lb at 34 weeks. Same for dd2 and 3 and ds...

Desmondo2016 · 25/07/2018 22:00

Yep ive had 4 and can categorically say the predicted weight each time turned out to be a load of rubbish!

OpheliaLeghorn · 25/07/2018 22:02

I don't think they're very accurate. They predicted that my DC1 would be "about 6lb". He was nearly 10lb. The others were even bigger. Confused

WishUponAStar88 · 25/07/2018 22:04

Both my babies plotted above the upper line through pregnancy. They were both fairly big at 9 and 10lb but relatively easy uncomplicated births so a big baby isn’t necessarily a problem Smile

Doublechocolatetiffin · 25/07/2018 22:05

I wouldn’t worry too much at this stage. Scans are notoriously unreliable and they are testing for GD which is the main concern. There isn’t anything particularly bad about big babies. I was told I had a big baby, 8lbs 12oz at 38 weeks. She arrived at 41 weeks at 10lbs. It was a much easier birth than my first, I had her at home with gas and air and only a small tear. So it’s not necessarily bad having a big baby. She’s been very content since, apparently big babies often are.

cooookies · 25/07/2018 22:10

I agree about the scans not being reliable. I had the diabetes test also which came back normal and regular growth scans, the last of which being just over 38 weeks and an efw of 10lb6oz!!! I was induced a week later for this reason and DS was born at 9lb3oz xx

Cosmoa · 25/07/2018 22:12

Like others have said.. They're known to be inaccurate. Don't let yourself get too upset about it!

NCPuffin · 25/07/2018 22:15

My baby had an estimated weight of 1.9 kg (4lb) last Monday at 30+3. Someone's gotta have the biggest babies on that chart, not everyone can be in the middle! Head and abdominal circumference are above 90th centile, whereas a few weeks previously they'd been just below
I may sound flippant, but it does make me worry, mainly because I am concerned about the implications of a high birth weight in later life and feel guilty because I am obese, and worry that's why the baby is big.

I'd already had the GTT, they might repeat it depending on the findings of the next growth scan. I do feel that more scans can lead to more anxiety, even though I imagine they're supposed to do the opposite! Can you call your midwife or antenatal unit and explain you have questions about your scan results? Ime they're more than happy to help anxious mums.

cakesandphotos · 26/07/2018 07:12

My 35 week scan said baby was 8lb 3oz. I was really scared I would have a 12lb baby! Not aided by the fact my consultant said my baby would be over 11lb if it carried on at that rate. I delivered at 39 weeks. He was 8lb 3oz 🙄 remember there’s a 25% margin for error but talk to your midwife if you’re worried

RuskBaby · 26/07/2018 07:26

My little one was estimated to be over 11lb. She was 7lb 13oz, not tiny but she has long legs so think that skewed the calculations. It’s also worth remembering that their heads don’t gain all the extra lbs.

toomanyeastereggsurghh · 26/07/2018 07:56

Weight predictions are notoriously terrible. My baby’s head measured off the top of the charts at 20weeks and predicted to be well over 10lbs at birth but was in fact 9lb 3oz which is on large side but not “well over 10lbs”! Head was pretty big though Blush
