75mg aspirin daily??

Hi
My midwife told me to take 75mg daily until the birth. I went to a pharmacy and explained and the lady knew straight away which one to give me. But on the back of the box it says in bold ‘do not take if pregnant’ now I’m frightened to take it incase something bad happens!

Does anyone else take this too? Thanks

Do you know why it was advised? It’s not unusual to be advised to take a small daily dose of aspirin when pregnant if you have certain risk factors. I took a daily dose during the last trimester on the advice of the obstetrician. However, you do not have to follow the suggestion if you feel, having informed yourself of the risks and benefits either way, it is not appropriate for you, your baby, and your situation.

Yes, I did. I'm pretty sure it was because I'd had gestational hypertension with my first pregnancy. It is often given to reduce the risk of miscarriage and is pretty commonly prescribed.

I was told to take it but I'm allergic to those drugs so spoke with a doctor. Didnt take them and I was fine. Weigh up the risks and ask for a telephone appointment with a doctor to discuss the situation

I've been taking it since the start of second trimester as I am high risk for pre eclampsia due to medical conditions and medications that I take. It's to reduce the need for you to inject daily blood thinners but that may still happen anyway depending on what your reasons are. I get lots of nosebleeds now since taking it but have been told that is also normal!

I'm prescribed 150mg a day until birth due to placenta dysfunction in previous pregnancy which led to losing my baby at 24 weeks but that's under the monitoring of my consultant so can understand your hesitation. Maybe speak to gp?

Just as a general thing, many drugs say that they should not be taken in pregnancy because it is not ethical to test drugs on pregnant women, so there is no clinical data to show that it is safe. This doesn't mean that they are not safe for pregnant women, just that they haven't been tested. Many many women are prescribed aspirin throughout pregnancy to mitigate various risk factors and they and their babies are fine.

I would go back to your midwife or gp to have a chat through your concerns, and they may be able to reassure you.

I've been on it since I was 12 weeks and am 34 weeks now. It's because I and Preeclampsia with myast pregnancy. So far it's been a great help and my blood pressure has been lower than pre pregnancy. I've not had any side effects apart from low blood pressure, which is welcome after hypertension last pregnancy.

I have just been prescribed 75mg due to precious mc and my bmi following my scan.

purplesmiler · 25/07/2018 10:29

I have been on 150mg since the beginning and will be in it till 36 weeks. My consultant said it’s due to previous miscarriages but also because of my age (I’m 39). Other than being a blood thinner it also I,proved the blood flow to the placenta (according to my consultant).

*improves

I've been on 75mg aspirin since 12 weeks, currently 31 weeks. This is due to complications in my last pregnancy. All has been fine so far. As PP said, they can't test the effects on pregnant women, so many medications advise not to take them whilst pregnant or to ask a GP/pharmacist first. If you've been told to take it, then you can be assured it's safe to do so.

Dreamingofkfc · 26/07/2018 09:25

If you were advised to, it's probably due to risk factors for pre-eclampsia or previous miscarriages. If you are advised to do something, just ask the reasoning behind it so you know and can make an informed decision. I'm always amazed by the amount of people who take medication or turn up for appointments and don't have a clue why

BlueBug45 · 26/07/2018 09:36

OP loads of pregnant women take it due to having a risk factors for pre-eclampsia. The research for miscarriages is inconclusive. Research has shown it causes no harm. (So many woman take it that unless you specifically ask them then none of your family and friends will tell you they did/do.)

You should confirm with your midwife or GP how long you should take it for.

Normally you take it every day between 12 and 36 weeks. You don't take it after 36 weeks as if you go into labour you are more likely to have bleeding complications.
