Growth Scan

So I went for my growth scan due to my BMI today and everything looks good, placenta delivering really good blood flow, strong heartbeat, baby was head down and there was a good amount of fluid. We even got a pic. However, they told me afterwards (I saw a doctor) that the tummy was measuring off the scale, but his head and legs were within range, his head slightly big, legs were fine. They now want me to do the GD test which is fine and I’m gearing myself up to it in two weeks time after my holiday but does a big tummy always mean GD? Big babies seem to run in my partner’s family (all his nieces and nephews have had to be born by c section because they’re too big).
I’m beating myself up about this now and near to tears as I feel like I’ve done this to him because I’m overweight and like my food too much and haven’t been healthy enough.

This is not your fault at all! My last baby, I was normal bmi, he had big belly on growth scan. I had the GD test anyway as it runs in my family, they tested me again, nothing. Then I gave birth, 10lb4! They checked him again, nothing. Sometimes we just have big babies and there is no rhyme or reason. He is a tall boy now and people always comment because me and my partner are so average. Don't beat yourself up at all. Like the consultant said to me, sometimes women just have big babies. Wait to see the GD results and take it from there Thanks

In my recent experience, a woman with a raised bmi can not have a straight forward pregnancy (in the opinion of consultants) I had the rigmarole of all of this, I never had a thing, yet they still insisted on inducing me 3 weeks early because she was measuring big...I was a big baby and so was dh, it happens!!

My stomach measurements were always over, but then if you measured my belly now at 5 months pp, it's probably still measure at 24 weeks...because I'm overweight! The midwifes I saw said that the tummy measurements were extremely unaccurate, even said they sent women in for growth scans at 40 weeks for static growth even though they knew it was because baby had engaged and bump had dropped - it's all guideline nonesense!

Big babies do happen and they run in your family!

The measurements of your bump is probably a bit of baby and a bit of you, with the greatest respect!

Honestly don't worry, all they will have you do IF you do have GD is monitor your bloods daily and control sugars with your diet/take a metformin tablet, in some cases insulin is needed but I think that's quite rare.

I suppose a bit of extra monitoring is never a bad thing, I had growth scans up until 36 weeks because I felt like they were determined to find something!

You and your baby will be absolutely fine Thanks
