Nursery flooring

If you had the choice what would you have as flooring in the baby's bedroom?

Carpet: soft/cosy and warm/quiet to walk on but easy to stain.
Wood or laminate: easy to clean

I am just starting to decorate and today discovered that the flooring needs replacing - DH and I have differing views on what would be best!

Personally I'd go for carpet every time as it's better for the little one when they start moving around in my opinion. Chances are they won't make that much mess in there initially but you can get a carpet with stain prevention built in and use scotch guard if you find you need to.

Nyancat · 24/07/2018 19:55

Unhelpful but depends on your child. My first we had carpet and it was horrific. She had awful reflux and projectile vomited constantly til she was over a year old. We got vinyl put down and it was a godsend. Second DC never threw up so carpet would have been fine.

Yarnswift · 24/07/2018 19:56

Wood. Carpets are grim.

Knittedfairies · 24/07/2018 19:59

I put a large tumble twist bath mat down in the baby’s room by the cot - easy to throw in the washing machine if necessary. It was...

Carpet; wood or laminate for wherever they eat but when she was going through the stage of starting to stand then later starting to walk she used to fall a lot and hard floor would have been a nightmare.
I’ve never had to clean anything from the floor in DDs bedroom and it’s much more comfortable to sit on carpet if you have to spend time soothing them in the cot as I’ve been doing for a while

Havetothink · 24/07/2018 21:00

Laminate, best thing we ever did, easy to clean. We got those foam floor mats (Chadvally I think, that slot together like a jigsaw) to go over most of it too for when she was mobile. If you do go laminate just make sure you get some underlay to reduce noise.

museumum · 24/07/2018 21:02

Wood with lots of warm washable rugs Grin

qwerty2018 · 24/07/2018 21:03

You can get a type of carpet that cleans really well, people have it in thier kitchens it’s that good!

BearCubX · 24/07/2018 21:05

Laminate with a couple of nice rugs.

DrWhy · 24/07/2018 21:05

Carpet, it will get messy but it’s warm and cosy when you end up lying on the floor in there at some point and it’s quiet when you are trying to tiptoe out!

qwerty2018 · 24/07/2018 21:06

It’s called Flotex

seven201 · 24/07/2018 21:06

An easy clean carpet. We do not have one in our dd's room! There's a calpol stain that won't shift. We have one on our dining room that's great though.

DamsonPie · 24/07/2018 21:09

We went for a cheap washable carpet that can be bleach cleaned. It’s warm and cosy for DS to play and crawl on. We bought the cheapest carpet because we fully expect to have to replace it after a few years of sick, wee, paint, mud, etc.

ChristmasAccountant · 24/07/2018 21:14

Carpet. We have wood and trying to sneak out of the room with a sleeping baby in it on wooden floor with bare feet = recipe for disaster!

SoyDora · 24/07/2018 21:18

Carpet. Mine are 4 and 3 and nothing has stained their carpets yet... the only thing they do in their rooms is sleep in them!

Celebelly · 24/07/2018 21:19

This is a timely thread as we are just discussing this. We have settled on laminate with a nice big cosy rug. We have carpet in there at the moment but I don't like it very much. We have animals so carpets aren't great in general due to the cat and dog hair and the odd cat upchuck, and I imagine there will be spillages and vomit and things so something easy to clean will be helpful.

surreygirl1987 · 25/07/2018 09:31

We're going for carpet but with a massive comfy rug.

December2018 · 25/07/2018 09:40

My little man is due in December and I've stuck with carpet as it will be so much warmer for him his nursery room is freezing in winter, I will be getting him a big comfy rug too
I think laminate looks better but I think it would be better for them later on when they start toddling and playing with toys and things, you can dettol it and keep it cleaner too which would reassure me I think

mumofmunchkin · 25/07/2018 09:44

It depends how much time you envisage them spending in there. For various reasons my two ended up sleeping in our room for nearly a year, and then when they went into their own rooms they pretty much just slept in there and played with toys/made mess downstairs in the lounge, so carpet is fine. They are 4 and 2 now and have only just started playing in their room occasionally, but I don't allow shoes upstairs, and they only have drinks there if they are water or in sealed beakers.

Given our experience before, we're not going to bother setting up the new baby's room until I'm off on mat leave and we've decided exactly how we're going to arrange the bedrooms, and see when it's right for them to go in their own room.

sickmumma · 25/07/2018 10:05

Carpet, we have always had carpet and it's been fine with stains etc however we've now moved and have wood all upstairs too and I hate it! Feels cold and hard and not nice for the kids to sit and play on despite putting down huge rugs! Xx

ThanksItHasPockets · 25/07/2018 11:41

I’d go for none of the above and have vinyl, tbh. Warmer underfoot and quieter than wood or laminate, but easy to clean.

GLTC do some lovely rugs for kids’ rooms. I am currently in the market for one, having spilt Calpol on the carpet...Blush

DappledThings · 25/07/2018 12:35

Carpet. We're just decorating our new house and replacing the laminate that's in all bedrooms with carpet. So both toddler and baby will have carpet.

Anything else just seems really un-cosy to me.

Tyrionsbitch · 25/07/2018 22:28

Thanks for all your replies! Going to look at some flooring options tomorrow in shops and see what we can find 😁
