Induction- terrified.

I know I've seen posts like this before but am panicking and can't find them now!

Advised by consultant that baby needs to come out before or on due date so have been booked in for induction on due date.

I'm absolutely terrified to be honest, always hear about failed inductions, instrument deliveries, EMCS.

Please help put my mind at ease!

I had an induction at 41+5. My experience was a pretty positive one. I was given the drop straight away after they discovered my waters had broken (I have no recollection of when this happened 😳) and I progressed quickly. I did require an episiotomy and forceps but it is what it is. I’m just glad that my baby arrived safe and sound.

Just relax and go with it. Good luck!

I had an induction at 41+6 and honestly it was fantastic. I mainly attribute this to the fact I was offered an epidural before they even hooked me up to the drip so the whole process was relaxed and pain free. I really enjoyed the time just hanging out with my DH and listening to music/chatting etc. That was just my choice though and I totally get that lots of people prefer not to start with that level of pain relief. I could still feel tightening and the whole pushing process despite it but just didn't hurt. I had a third degree tear which again was dealt with quickly and obviously I didn't feel. If I had a choice I would be induced next time as the whole thing was really pleasant.

Good luck though, you will be absolutely fine :)

My induction started when I was 38+2. I was already 2cms dilated before I got induced. Prepare yourself for a long wait when being induced as it can be very slow for some but really quick for others. I started with the pessary which didn't do anything for me. 24hrs later I got the gel and progressed to 4cms. Waters broken the following morning and delivered baby 15hrs later after waters breaking. Baby was slightly in distress with the contractions from the drip so it had to be turned off a lot. Filled out forms for emergency section but in the end managed to deliver on my own without any interventions needed, just lots of doctors and midwifes in the room lol! So from start to finish it took 4 days to induce me. Good luck.

I was 41+6 when I was induced.
Started me off with a pessary at 11am Thursday and DS was born Friday morning about 4.30am.
I did have forceps but he was big (long) - just under 10lb.
Definitely recommend having an epidural if they have to put you on a drip as the contractions intensify considerably at this point.

Try not to worry and remember that any discomfort won't last forever. That's what I kept focussing on and it helped me to keep thinking that this time tomorrow, I'll be relaxing with a newborn.

It'll be grand. Smile

I was induced at 38 weeks because I had obstetric cholestasis. Please don't panic, I understand as I was worried too but it was alright.

Just to say the first part of induction is slow going (pessary for 24hrs) so download loads of TV and films on a tablet or take a good book. Oh and try to get lots of sleep, obviously! Once my waters were broken, my DD was born in less than 3 hours, although my family do have a bit of a rep for fast labours! Thankfully only needed two stitches and with baby in my arms, I honestly barely noticed.

All in all, we were really well looked after and I'm sure you will be too :) try to relax as much as you can. Good luck!

I had an induction at exactly 40weeks, pessary was in for 9 hours then my waters broke on their own and I was allowed to go back to my ‘natural’ birth plan, gas and air in the pool. 8 hours later I was holding my baby girl!

Aw12345 · 24/07/2018 18:41

Thanks so much for your replies. Has really put my mind at rest.... I would never risk my baby obviously so if consultant says placenta won't cope past my due date then obviously I'll listen but it is still a scary thought!

I also have some guilt about 'forcing' the baby out when he doesn't want to come :-(

I went in for induction 39+6, was given a pessary at 2pm and began having period like pains at 4pm, laboured through the night, the only thing that helped was nice long baths, waters went at about 5am that morning, continued labouring and went up to birth ward at around 2pm so roughly 24hrs after pessary, I did struggle to push as the change in enviroment messed up my contractions and they did begin to worry that they were going to have to intervene i.e forceps delivery however after an episiotomy i managed to deliver my daughter, honestly you just go with the flow when you are in the situation, some inductions fail, some do not, what you have to remember is that its all temporary and once your baby is in your arms and the birth and labour is over all of the pain melts away and non of it matters anymore, birth plans rarely go to plan, i wanted a water birth in the birth centre and ended up having an induction due to rfm, on the bright side my daughter was born on her due date and i went home that same night. Good luck mama, im sure you will be fine, just go with the flow, and stay positive x

MangoApplePear · 24/07/2018 20:21

Aw, don’t worry. I had two successful inductions. You are doing the best for your baby so don’t ferl guilty. It will all be fine. 😊

Flowerypig · 24/07/2018 20:23

My last two were both induced at 38 weeks because fongestational diabetes. Both were straightforward natural non instrumental births. 24 hrs from pessary in to baby out. Would request induction tbh. I like predictability!

Wowzel · 24/07/2018 20:25

Mine took ages... I ate a lot of snacks!

BunloafAndCrumpets · 24/07/2018 20:39

I was induced last time and have asked for an ELCS if it comes to it this time - this is an option for you too. Just thought I'd mention it.

Ediemccreedy · 24/07/2018 22:39

I had one on my last baby, I chose not to have an epidural. I regret this as it was a lot more intense than previous deliveries. I had no instruments or stitches.

Karigan198 · 24/07/2018 22:41

What size is your baby? If it’s a bigger baby and you are being induced please think about the epidural as it makes it easier to go straight to c section if needed.

Most inductions work out fine (I’m told) but it can reduce the push ability a bit which makes it harder if the baby is bigger etc.

PerspicaciaTick · 24/07/2018 22:45

I was induced early and TBH it was rather a lovely serene few days in the hospital. Very calm, lots of gentle walking around and I made some lovely friends.
Definitely seriously consider an epidural if you are put on a syntocin drip.
