Baby kicks when lying on back

Evening!

I’m 25 weeks pregnant and the baby has just been having a little party....I’ve noticed that it kicks most when I lay on my back. I only do this for a v short time as I know it’s better than lay on your side (at night I sleep on my side).

I guess my concern is that it has a little kick about when I’m on my back because it’s uncomfortable or in distress. Any thoughts?

I would like to know the answer to this aswell my baby does the same although I'm only 19weeks

Does the baby kick when your on your side too?

It could just be that your still and laid down, so you're feeling the kick more.

It shouldn't hurt the baby. If anything, it's more uncomfortable for you and can affect your breathing slightly.

I'm 23 weeks and same here - baby goes mad when I'm lying on my back! I highly doubt it's distress (but I am definitely NOT a medical professional!), she also seems to do the jive when I'm leaning back on the sofa but propped up (so no issue). I also read on my back for an hour or so before bed and it's always my favourite bonding time with baby.
I had anomalies/complications in my first pregnancy and never felt like I bonded with baby before she arrived (didn't want to tempt fate) but I am absolutely loving the time with this one in the evenings!

Wouldnt worry about lying on your back just yet, it's only when baby and uterus get pretty heavy.
I still feel baby move the most when on my back/ reclined (38 weeks) or in the bath tub! Do t think baby is stressed just more space to wiggle x

Anydaynow2 · 24/07/2018 07:27

You can just feel it a bit more when on back as everything sort of sinks with gravity, don't worry, perfectly normal. I sometimes went on my back on purpose to feel it in the earlier days before I could feel him all the time.

I just figured baby spins back to back when you're on your back so the arms and legs are forward?

Aspenn17 · 24/07/2018 07:45

I’m fairly sure it’s the opposite, baby has more room to kick around when you are lying down so is happy and stretching and kicking it’s little limbs! Also as someone else said above, you can feel it more when you lie down. Ask your midwife if you’re worried x

Don’t lie flat on your back in late pregnancy - you’ll get caval compression, where the heavy uterus squashes down on your vena cava, the major vein returning blood to your heart. The reduced venous return means a reduced cardiac output, which can make you feel faint and reduces the blood and oxygen flow to your baby.
In early pregnancy it’s not usually a problem, as the combined weight of baby, placenta and fluid plus uterus isn’t high enough to compress so much. If you need a Caesarean, you’ll notice the operating table is tilted laterally to avoid this, or a wedge is inserted under your hip to tilt you.

But you do lie on your back for the midwife to measure fundal height and listen to the heartbeat so it can't be dangerous for a minute or so.

Italianshark · 24/07/2018 09:22

I'm 22 weeks and I wake up on my back most mornings, It's not dangerous. Like someone said before, its when you are bigger, the extra weight puts pressure on your main arteries so you may get a little light headed if you remain in that position for too long.

My baby moves like mad when I go from my side to my back like it wakes her up haha but still... OH can't feel a thing!

Theweasleytwins · 24/07/2018 09:27

I'm 25 weeks and if I lie on my back I can see my tummy moving she kicks so hard! Don't lie on my back long as it hurts

Zeebabyyyy · 02/10/2023 03:26

I lay on my back and count to 10 knowing he's about to go at it... I feel like he hates when I lay on my back and my right side.... As soon as I lay on my left he stops lol because he's a lazy baby. I know when he's uncomfortable. Listen to your gut. Your baby feel what you feel and vs

jadey1991 · 02/10/2023 07:45

I am 30 weeks pregnant with my 4th.
My baby also does the same thing. Its nothing to worry about at all. As long as baby is kicking away nicely you are OK. They tend to move slot when your relaxed. As long as you sleep on your side it's fine. No panicking my lovelies. As you progress in pregnancy you will notice baby moving loads more

Congratulations all..
