Being induced!

Hi I'm 41+2 and due to be induced on Tuesday, I'm quite nervous about the whole process as I had a natural birth/going into labour experience with my first child. Just wondering if people could share their experiences of being induced with me please :)

Dc3 - pessary went in at 10.30pm, taken out at midnight as was no breaks between contractions, started pushing at 5am & baby born at 6.30am.

Gutted never got my water birth as baby being sleepy (during labour 🙄) meant I had to stay hooked to monitor.

I was expecting a 2 day dragged out labour so was pleasantly surprised!

Hi op. The induction date was enough to send me into labour so maybe you will go yourself in the meantime. I went myself the first time at a few days over and couldn't believe when I got to 41 weeks with the second.

Best of luck

Aw OP, I actually came to the pregnancy board because I was wondering if anyone had made a thread about waiting to be induced.

Just like you I had a natural labour first time round and then 8 months ago I was induced with my son. I wasn’t overdue but I was anxious about reduced movement.

It might be different for you because you are plenty past your due date, but I was in for quite a while. Despite my initial anxiety it was frankly a really great experience! I went from pessary to having waters broken so I’ll give you a little run down.

Was admitted to the shared ward on Sunday afternoon and was given the pessary. Only ended up having one pessary (was told there would be 2, 12 hours apart if I remember rightly). I then started having mild contractions a couple of hours later. Was free to move around the hospital and there is a Costa at ours and a subway which kindly gives ladies from the labour wards free ice chips Grin so we spent plenty of time out of the ward.

In the evening around 7pm I was getting quite anxious and the midwife was very very kind. Gave me a shot of pethidine (basically I was very anxious because I suffered terrible contraction pain first time round with no sympathy from MW, no pain relief and was really frightened of being in that position in front of the other beds on the ward).

I then was able to relax, eat, watch films on the laptop with DH and just relax. Was still having mild contractions but not very painful. At around midnight contractions were intensifying and I was getting a bit anxious again so MW advised I had a bath in the lovely big tub they had in one of the bathrooms. Did this and felt much better. I was anxious again in the early hours of the morning and was (apparently against usual practice) given another shot of pethidine and had a sleep.

When I woke up contractions had faded so was back to square one in a sense. Had breakfast and briefly spoke to a consultant; went to have a mooch around costa and try and get contractions going and when I came back I was told I’d be going up to the labour ward to have my waters broken!

Went through that and got an epidural eventually. Regret it as I would have been fine in the end on G&A and pethidine - that was actually the worst part of the whole labour! As with most people once waters are broken things tend to move along then. So even if none of the previous stuff works for you, this will likely get things going. Long story short despite concerns of DS not dropping and me not getting any more dilated - DS was born by 9pm.

It was a great experience! I had lots of very kind midwives around me - one was an assistant or nurse I think and she Helen my hand and gave me some beautifully soothing hypnotherapy talks - I will forever be grateful for that.

Sorry, one thing I’ve missed in that huge waffle was - be prepared for the amount of monitoring you will receive if you aren’t hanging around waiting to go into labour - there was a lot! And usually for about half an hour each time. Be prepared - bring books or ideally a device and headphones with stuff pre downloaded on it - there was no WiFi on the ward in my hospital, and the headphones will help drown the noise of others out. Also bring plenty of food and drinks if you don’t have an on site shop or cafe. Most of all don’t panic, inductions can be intense but it’s relatively unlikely that you will be given the synthetic oxytocin drip, so most likely you will be fine. Best of luck!

I had a spontaneous labour with my first and really didn't want to be induced second time around. I went in 14 days overdue and was supposed to be induced. While waiting I was told I was next and to pack up several times....one time I was even in a wheelchair but it was eventually cancelled due to lack of space/staffing. DH went home and I stayed in overnight. I can't sleep in hospital so I was wide awake all night. I was moved to a public waiting room at 10am for 2 hours (because they needed my room) and then taken to the delivery suite at midday, then 15 days overdue.

We were left for 3 hours before anyone came back and then my waters were broken. I immediately went into labour and baby was born 4 hours later. Epidural given but didn't work. Scary ending when her heart rate dipped very low and the room was flooded with doctors and emergency equipment. I was told she'd been in for too long.

So good (because labour was quick) and bad (because of the delay) experience.

was induced at 40 weeks with my DD last year. I was admitted at 10am, they checked and I was already 1cm dilated. They inserted a pessary, and after a few hours this turned from cramping into contractions.

They became more intense throughout the night and by the time my nurse came back on her shift at 9am, I was 5cm. They moved me into the birthing suit about 11.30am, I had an epidural and baby was born around 2.30pm.

Although painful (however I'm sure natural labour is too) I found it pretty straight forward and a relatively good experience. I hope this
helps and good luck OP!!
