One-to-One Midwives Experiences?

Thought I'd posted this before so appologies if I already have. I've been looking into One to one midwives and it appears the NHS covers them in this area (Liverpool). I've had a look online but only threads I can find are a few years old. What's interesting to me is the fact you keep hold of your midwife for six weeks post-birth which would be ideal compared to NHS midwife who I believe discharged you to the health visitor at around 11-15 days. I saw a post where someone had had difficulty breastfeeding and they had been brilliant helping with this, which is important to me. The 24/7 contact is just an added bonus.

My current midwife does seem lovely, although I've only seen her once at my 16 week appointment as she was on holiday for my booking, and looking at one to one is absolutely no reflection on her, but they just seem to offer so much more than NHS.

My question is had anyone had current/recent experience with One to One Midwives and in particular in the Liverpool Area.

Thanks in advance for any pointers people can give Smile

I'm under one to one (also in Liverpool, hi!) and although I'm only 15 weeks at the moment, I can say that it has been a far far better experience than the three babies I had under community midwife care.

My appointments are longer and more personal, even the scan felt different, more relaxed and we were given so much more information than a standard NHS scan. The sonographer told us precisely what she was doing and why as she did it, then we saw the midwife who went through the scan results with us and explained what all of the measurements meant.

I had an episode of bleeding, my midwife gave me so much information and told me that (I was 13 weeks while bleeding) if I miscarried to ring her and she would be there right away to support me through the whole thing. That illustrates how dedicated to support the service is!

Thanks for replying. I'm currently 16 weeks. That sound so different to my experience with the midwife at the womens who did my scan and just bluntly said that they don't give out scan results on the day even though I was only asking whether the measurements was within range. Do you know if they cover the whole of Liverpool? I'm Mossley Hill based so keeping my fingers crossed. I put a query form in yesterday night so hopefully will hear back from them on Monday. Where have you appointments been held? And have you have more/less than the usual NHS schedule? Where do they do the scans? Sorry for all the questions, I'll get all hopeful now and then they'll say they can't cover me on Monday.

Glad all seems to be working out well for you after your scare as well x

Yes, they cover all of Liverpool..I'm not far from you actually!

My apoointments have been at my house, the scan was at the medical centre at CHildwall Fiveways.

I have opted to have my appointments clustered near to the end of my pregnancy, you can be flexible with them depending on when you think you need them.

I might bump into you at one of their coffee mornings!

FirstTimeBumps · 22/07/2018 18:56

I was nosing at their Facebook earlier and missed a meet the midwife morning on Rose Lane on the 6th. Been having a proper research and think I definitely want to transfer to them. Even things such as rectifying tongue tie in newborns rather than having an eight week wait in the NHS, everything seems so much better! I'll see what they say when they hopefully call tomorrow! Maybe see you at the next one Smile

I had one to one with my last three pregnancies, also had scans at fiveways. They were excellent and really helpful after the births.

Sebbies · 22/07/2018 19:09

How much does this cost? I can’t see any pricing information on their website?

FirstTimeBumps · 22/07/2018 20:54

@Sebbies what area are you in. It's covered by the NHS in some areas x

OP posts:
MyDcAreMarvel · 22/07/2018 21:43

It’s always free but only available in certain areas.

ThanksItHasPockets · 22/07/2018 21:52

FWIW NHS community midwives won’t necessarily discharge you so early. I was under mw care for 28 days after my first baby and am still under mw care with DC2, born 35 days ago, as he isn’t quite back to his birth weight yet.

Zoey36 · 23/07/2018 09:52

Hi. I'm also in Liverpool but am 34/35 weeks. I'd heard of One-to-one Midwives but never looked into it all. I'd heard about how good they are for tongue tie and feeding support which is what I'm most concerned about now rather than appointment etc. Does anyone know if you can join just for the post-natal care? I still don't really know what it all is really!

FirstTimeBumps · 23/07/2018 10:18

I think I read on an old forum someone had. Would you not transfer now x

I’m Liverpool never heard of one to one midwives this sounds really good so far I’m 28 weeks and never seen the same midwife do you see the same one everytime?

user1471443026 · 23/07/2018 11:59

Not me but my SIL in Liverpool used one to one towards the end of last year and she has been raving about them to everyone since saying how fantastic they were. The support afterwards was fantastic and they really helped her with feeding.

The only slight criticism was that she did feel that they pushed her more towards a home birth which hadn't been her original plan with it being her first but she is really happy that she did it now.

FirstTimeBumps · 23/07/2018 12:01

@Hayleyxmx apparently so, and if for any reason they're unavailable you get a buddy midwife. With the community Midwives I had one girl book me in for my 8week then saw my "usual" midwife for my 16 week. She seemed lovely and feel kind of bad losing her, she seemed really nice and experienced but One-to-One seem to offer so much more. I phoned you about an hour ago and they referred me over the phone and said I should hear from my new midwife in 48 hours Smile

I phoned them* about an hour ago sorry. Also I am dissapointed that my GP didn't even let me know about them. Was just like here's the booking number for the women's, phone them Hmm

I'm Liverpool and this was never pushed with me. Although my last child was 2 years ago I'm sure they were around. I had a lovely midwife so was very lucky but I would have liked to look into this. My SIL is pregnant so I'll tell her.

Hayleyxmx · 23/07/2018 12:57

Thanks @FirstTimeBumps I’ll look into this now, I was the same just given a referral for the womans. Hopefully might help me not feel so lost, fingers crossed 🤞

FirstTimeBumps · 23/07/2018 17:31

Just got my referral email through and have a personal care plan to fill in and my assigned midwife will be in touch within 48 hours. Will keep you all posted x

I've got someone coming to the house to book me in on Saturday lunchtime! I'll let you know how it goes!

FirstTimeBumps · 26/07/2018 13:01

I had my new buddy midwife text yesterday and then she phoned and booked me in for my 20 weeks scan Smile

OP posts:
Zoey36 · 28/07/2018 17:57

I'm now booked in with them and from just the first meeting today,I can say that I wish I'd known about them sooner! I've only got 4 and a half weeks until my due date so I've lost a lot of time but wow....can't believe their service is free for us. I'd definitely recommend!

FirstTimeBumps · 28/07/2018 18:51

@Zoey36 are you Liverpool based too? My new midwife is back on Tuesday and apparently she'll call for a chat then. When my buddy midwife booked me in for my 20 week she said that my midwife would come with me to it which I thought was dead nice.

OP posts:
Zoey36 · 30/07/2018 10:09

@FirstTimeBumps yes I'm in Liverpool. That is really nice! I now have to phone my GP surgery to tell them I've transferred my care over to One to One. I feel a little bit bad because my community midwife seems lovely - I've only met her twice but I hope she doesn't feel offended! I'd like a home birth and the midwife on Saturday said they provide the pool! Saves me hiring one!
