Worry over to you femurs!?

Hjkillas · 20/07/2018 20:48

I had a scan at 32 weeks to check for placenta position. She measured femurs on 3% and I was worried but no one mentioned anything so assumed she just had small legs.

When a community midwife assessed my notes today (37+5) she said she's booked me for a growth scan tomorrow because of the small femurs.. she was under the assumption that It had
been addressed to me..now im panicking why wasn't this investigated earlier or atleast spoken to me about it!?
She said they are checking for a curve on the growth. Please tell me others have been in my position and it's been fine? I'm scared now 😫

Also screening for syndromes in early pregnancy came back low risk.

😔

Meant short femurs in title.

Already had an anxiety attack today related to movement. (been checked and reassured) don't need this aswell :(
They will end up inducing me for stress soon 🙄 xx

Please try not to worry, if they had been concerned they would have referred you for further scans. My DD's femurs measured small at my 20-week scan (7th centile) and I worried myself sick about it. Like you I was very low risk but it didn't make me feel any better. We booked a private growth scan for 30 weeks and the femurs had caught up and were 50th centile, sometimes they just grow at different rates. She was born completely healthy.

If it helps I had so much anxiety when pregnant largely due to some observation about the size of something. Too small, too big, too little, too much. Everything was fine in the end. The worst one was being told I didn't have much amniotic fluid! Googled and freaked out. Demanded to be seen in pregnancy assessment centre. Scanned and was completely reassured that I had an abundance of amniotic fluid.

Hjkillas · 21/07/2018 00:19

Anomoly scan at 20weeks was 19% 32 weeks 3%
I pray tomorrow 37+6 weeks it will have atleast gone to 5% otherwise I'm going to be in an abundance of panic about SKD and downs 💔 I'm so odd to having my baby that nothing can be done but I suffer with bad anxiety as it is and I'm so scared for my little bundle to be in trouble 😣

Try not to worry. Anxiety is a bitch and the fear of the unknown in pregnancy can definitely make it worse.
Hope all goes ok for you tomorrow - try to get some sleep Flowers

Right now I'm cuddling my healthy 6 week old whose femurs measured below the first percentile from 23 weeks. I'm not going to lie, the pregnancy was absolutely terrifying, but it all ended up fine.

There are so many different things that could cause a short femur, including measurement error or a perfectly healthy but small baby. In my case it was intrauterine growth restriction, which is scary but completely manageable, especially if you're already in your third trimester.

I hope you get your answers soon. I know telling you not to worry touch would be a ridiculous suggestion, but I hope it helps to know that as well as the scary possibilities there are cases like mine where it's all okay too.

Hjkillas · 21/07/2018 05:42

Thanks guys.
I just feel completely out of control over the whole thing. Just praying today that they're happy with the growth. I'll be sure to come back and let you know what they say. Last time head was somewhere around 50% and abdominal was right up the top end so we will see today. Will be hard for them to measure the head as she's already 3/5ths of the way into my pelvis x

I've had 3 babies and the last two measured small on femurs, as did my niece. All 3 had at least one growth scan. All born completely healthy and don't look short or anything. Both my children measure much larger on the head centile and average/smaller on the leg but you wouldn't notice! Try not to worry (I know it's hard)

RallyAnnie · 21/07/2018 08:20

At 20 weeks my daughter was below the bottom of the scale for short legs. Two weeks later I went back for another scan and she had grown enough to get onto the chart.

ShutTheFridgeUp · 21/07/2018 08:38

I've been having regular scans since 20 weeks (now 33) and baby has consistently been measuring below the 5th for femur length.
Despite me reiterating every visit that DH's side of the family have short legs (FIL is 5'8, but wears 29" trousers) they still insist on scanning! They aren't concerned necessarily, but keep checking to make sure he is still following his growth line, which he is.
Some babies just have short legs! The way I look at it is that they have to get the 'average' from somewhere and we are just part of that statistic!
I know it's scary, but honestly, I'm sure all will be fine.

Well thanks, people are just trying to help. I wish I hadn't wasted so much of my pregnancy worrying although it's much easier said than done. Hope you get answers soon OP and that everything is fine Flowers

All three of my children have very big tummies when I’m pregnant.
Think 99% centile kinda thing.

Sometimes they just are out of proportion just to be perfectly in proportion once they are born.

Hjkillas · 21/07/2018 11:03

Just had my scan, EST weight at 6lb14oz
Femurs now measuring 6% so that's good!
Just waiting to have a little consultation chat about everything but Doppler showed good blood flow x

JustVent · 21/07/2018 11:23

Excellent. Nothing wrong with having little legs (or in my DC’s case, big round tummies!).

Hjkillas · 21/07/2018 12:20

She has a big tummy, average head and small legs but doctor isn't concerned in the slightest so it's all good news and I can finally breathe easy.

Just want to hold my girl now I've been stressing so much!! They just told me to keep an eye on movements and don't hesitate to get checked if I'm concerned at any point.

C'mon baby let's go

JustVent · 21/07/2018 17:14

It is stressful isn’t it? I remember being worried about my baby’s tummy. But when DC2’s was measuring even bigger, I was just like ‘meh, tell me something new.’

With DC3 I realised I would worry if it wasnt big. Grin

Ive genuinely had to apologise to my other half for being so on edge and panicking. He said it's just who you are and I can see when you're scared so don't worry, I get why.
Thank god he knows me so well..he also told me off for googling 🤭 I'm apparently banned from googling anything my notes say now and to speak to only professionals haha
