Sleepyhead

My baby arrived yesterday after quite a traumatic labour and birth, absolutely adorable even if she is grumpy from being pulled around so much during labour!
It seems she's happier cocooned or being cuddled so I wonder if a sleepyhead would be worth it? Or any of the other brands on the market? We've made something similar for now out of towels and she's happy as Larry!
Any advice gratefully received Smile

We were told not to use a Sleepyhead or a similar pod/cushion as they are a SIDS risk - check the Lullaby Trust website.

If you’re breastfeeding you’ll probably have to cuddle her a lot anyway! I could barely put my daughter down for the first few weeks as she always wanted to be held. It settled down quickly though (she’s 8 weeks now).

But congratulations and good luck!

We used a Purflo nest, it was great and much cheaper than a sleepyhead. Used towels in a horseshoe shape when on holiday and that worked well too. Totally depends on budget I think.

I'm happy to buy a sleepyhead if it helps comfort her, not too concerned about price. She just seems to be happiest being snuggled up! Il have a look at that other brand you suggest.

Il check with regards to SIDS, see what they advise

And not breastfeeding, bottle feeding!

BE18mum why would you only cuddle your baby a lot of you're breastfeeding? Bottle fed babies can be cuddled just as much you know..

Zombiefy · 20/07/2018 16:17

We’re using a Sleepyhead for the second time and it does help. The Lullaby Trust recommend an empty cot and no nests etc but I figured the risk was smaller from the SH compared to me falling asleep holding them as neither would sleep in their cot. I do use a breathing monitor too and DS2 can’t roll yet.

We used the sleepyhead with two of ours as well, and found it great.

My SIL has been raving about the sleepyhead and how I must get one. She lets baby sleep in it during the day and has it in the Moses basket at night time and says it's brilliant.

@happymummy12345 Because of the cluster feeding in the first few weeks and them not wanting to stop. You can cuddle your baby as much as you want but I didn’t get chance to put DD down when she was breastfeeding at first.

0310Star · 20/07/2018 17:21

Thank you everyone, I think il definitely look into investing in one!!

Advise is not to use one as they cannot be proven safe (unethical to test) but they also cannot be proven dangerous. Having cushions or soft toys can suffocate and it's up to you to decide if you think using a secure highly breathable support is safe.

I used one and loved it, meant we didn't need a travel cot or Moses basket when baby was tiny and baby settled better with it than without.

I am a big sleepy head fan! I would suggest getting a spare cover and I always had a muzzy underneath her to try and save any explosion/sick!!
wish they did adult sized ones

I’m with Zombiefy on this. I know that the cot/crib should be empty but after 4 weeks of a cuddly baby who would only sleep while held, DP and I were at breaking point. I didn’t feel safe co-sleeping and using rolled up towels didn’t feel safe either. For me the Sleepyhead was the next best option to the ideal sleeping situation.
It’s about finding the safest option for you. DP and I couldn’t be up indefinitely. Being as tired as we were could have easily led to accidentally falling asleep in a VERY unsafe sleeping situation. So small unknown risk from the Sleepyhead seemed a better choice for us.
Also it worked a treat!! DD slept better immediately. I had her in bed in it at first to start before moving to the cot a couple days later.

Definitely recommend and I also agree with @zombiefy. If your baby will go down in an empty crib or Moses basket then great but if, like a lot of babies, they won’t, a sleepyhead is better than staying up all night and day holding them.

I researched it and I don’t think a sleepyhead has been linked to a single incident of infant death, unlike falling asleep holding the baby.

Congratulations by the way!
