Accuracy of positive pregnancy test

Hi,

I'm just over 4 weeks pregnant (I think), I took the test yesterday morning, the day after my missed period, and then took another test in the afternoon and they were both positive.

I went to the doctor's (I happened to have an appointment booked anyway for something unrelated and thought I may as well mention the pregnancy then rather than book a separate appointment) and he said that even at the time of a missed period, pregnancy tests aren't that accurate and that even though I had two positive results I should still wait 2 more weeks and then test again.

Obviously I'm aware of the risk of an early miscarriage, and that that would cause positive then negative test results but that's not what he meant, he meant that I might not even be pregnant at the moment. Is that right?? I'd always been under the impression that a positive test was pretty unlikely to be wrong.

Today's tests are plenty accurate so if you've had two positives you are pregnant, but he might have been cautioning about chemical pregnancies, which sadly are quite common, hence suggesting you wait and test again.

Not sure what planet he is on. False positives are extremely rare so to get two is virtually unheard of. His advice harks back to the days when home pregnancy tests weren’t extremely reliable, they definitely are now!

My sister's doctor didn't even bother do my a test, he said one positive pregnancy test was good enough for him. Congratulations!

I thought you could get false negatives, but not false positives were very rare.

They are very accurate. 2 positives mean that right now you are pregnant. Congratulations! Not sure what planet your GP is on!

Yes, I assume he was also more likely to be cautioning in case of chemical pregnancy. tests are very accurate and 2 false positives would be incredibly unlikely. Congratulations.

Was the doctor an older person?

Tests nowadays are very accurate, to the point where one positive is taken as confirmation of pregnancy.

Maybe he's not up to date on pregnancy and home testing?

Thanks for all the replies. Maybe he was talking about a chemical pregnancy and just worded it badly. He actually wasn't old, I'd guess 40ish. I did wonder if he maybe thinks that it's better for people to think the positive test was wrong, rather than think the pregnancy ended really really early?
