GTT confusion

Hi ladies,

I was wondering if anyone could clarify whether the glucose tolerance test is necessary for all, or only if deemed to be high risk? I went for what I thought was a regular blood test for my 28 weeks this morning and was asked straight away by the nurse if I'd drunk the original lucozade an hour beforehand. I explained I hadn't, and hadn't been been made aware by anyone that I needed to and it wasn't written in my notes. She then refused to do my blood tests, explaining I now need to go to the clinic at the hospital and I'd wasted time. I left, rather taken aback, and have since done some Googling as was pretty sure I hadn't been told I needed it. I am still under the impression that the GTT is only offered if deemed necessary by the midwife, and thought I would had been told about this before hand? Maybe in my area everyone has it?

I've called my midwife team but as it's answerphone system only I won't get a response until tomorrow as they check messages at 8am...so I guess I just want to know what the 'norm' is and find out if I've completely missed something here! Feeling rather confused!

Hello! I had to have GTT test as have a BMI over 25 - I think you automatically get referred to it if that's the case or if midwife tests urine and finds sugars in urine.
But in either instance you should have been told about it - I would speak to your midwife about it definitely and ask when referral took place.

Where I work it's offered if you have a BMI over 30, family history, prev. GDM, prev. large baby etc and a few others. It's done at 26 weeks and is separate to the 28 week routine appointment.

Ah thank you. I don't fall into any of the categories listed so am rather confused. The nurse referred to it as the 'lucozade challenge' when I asked what to ask for at the hospital. I'll wait and see what the midwife team say when they call me back tomorrow - it's frustrating that my time has been completely wasted this morning and you can't actually speak to anybody straight away here as the operate an answerphone service for non emergency queries and appointments. Thanks for your quick responses ladies, at least its put my mind at ease that I've not completely missed something I should have known about!

There is a glucose challenge place performed in some places. Although it shouldn’t be done with lucozade these days as the new lucozade is not high sugar enough! Usually a preparation which can be mixed up is used now, and the hospital should provide this. Contact your midwife and ask if you can be referred for either glucose challenge or a formal glucose tolerance test.
