BFing with flat nipples

Had a nightmare last time, had most success with shields but they're a nightmare in terms of practicality. I had to stop much sooner than I wanted to because of so many issues. Pregnant again and really want to make a success of it this time. Has anybody had success with really flat nipples? How did you do it? What worked? Would really appreciate your advice so that I can go in this time ready armed! Thank you :-)

avent niplette. work amazingly at pulling it nipple out and doesn't hurt a bit.

I just pinched mine slightly (midwife described it as offering it to baby as flat like a sandwich!) And baby latched on no problem. It actually fixed my nipples (One flat one inverted) and they now stick out all the time.

Hi Smile
I was unable to breast feed my first due to flat nipples. I really want to this time round so I've ordered a Lansinoh latch assist. I have no idea if it will work but I'm going to give it a go. Just thought I'd let you know in case you want to look into that Smile

Thanks I did try the Lansinoh one with my first but didn't find it worked too well for me. I tried every device imaginable and am not sure I believe in them. I'm thinking the trick must be in the technique but who knows!

Not what you want to hear but as a future possibility, I had surgery. It was a 20min procedure ten years ago and now my nipples are permanently out but still react perfectly to cold etc.

Different babies might respond differently too... dc1 too impatient, couldn't get him to latch for ages then it was only after using the latch assist. Ended up completely ff after 2 weeks. 2nd dc - midwife sort of shoved her on soon after birth, and then after that they pretty much stuck out enough to have no issues with latch. Good luck!
