When to start using bio oil?

So, nowhere near showing yet as only 6+4, but thoughts on when to start rubbing the bio oil in on the stomach?

Well I'm 11+2 and haven't started yet Confused
If it's any help, my sisters say the Superdrug version is exactly the same but cheaper

It's a nice moisturiser - but will not prevent or minimise stretch marks. You'll either get them, or you won't.

JustVent · 18/07/2018 07:25

I always believed “you get them or you don’t” as well.

Except I used it was baby 1 and I only got a handful of stretch marks.
With baby 2 I believed there was no point and ended up with significantly more stretch marks.
I’m on baby 3 now and fully intend to use it.

Use cocoa butter, bio oil isn't magic unfortunately. I think moisturising does help your skin stretch. Start now.

mumofmunchkin · 18/07/2018 08:52

Stretch marks are caused by stretching at really deep layers of skin, which moisturisers don't reach, there's nothing you can do - some people have stretchier skin than others.

BlueBug45 · 18/07/2018 10:04

As per @mumofmunchkin said. It's genetic.

Poptart4 · 18/07/2018 10:08

I used nothing with my first pregnancy and didn't get any stretch marks. I used bio oil with my second pregnancy and got loads of stretch marks. I was much bigger with my 2nd pregnancy as i was holding alot of water.

I agree that nothing can stop you getting stretch marks, its the luck of the draw. But there's no harm in using bio oil or any other moisturiser. You can start anytime you like.

ForeverHopeful21 · 18/07/2018 15:37

I used oil twice daily as soon as I found out I was pregnant and I have no stretch marks (and I was huge and birthed a huge baby!)
My mum and two sisters all have stretch marks. Maybe I was lucky but I'll definitely use oil again!

BlankTimes · 18/07/2018 15:47

Bio Oil has something synthetic in it called PurCellin Oil™

I'd not be happy using it, but do your own research.

Hideandgo · 18/07/2018 15:48

Never, it will make no difference.

Wolfiefan · 18/07/2018 15:49

It'll have no effect on stretch marks at all. There are nicer moisturisers.

tappitytaptap · 18/07/2018 15:50

I have been using it since about 12 weeks.

Stroller15 · 18/07/2018 16:00

I also think you either get them or you don't. I didn't get stretchmarks with my first pregnancy and it's looking good so far with the second (touch wood) - but I did use bio oil after the baby was born instead. I think a good moisturiser will do the same.

MumOfTwoMasterOfNone · 18/07/2018 16:39

I have stretch marks on boobs and hips from puberty, but no stretch marks from an ENORMOUS pregnancy tummy from DS (and less so DD).
I lathered myself in body shop body butter (ones for very dry skin) and I got nothing! Grin
I think my skin isn't particularly stretchy, due to previous stretch marks so I definitely think it helped!

Shlomps · 20/07/2018 12:01

I was under the impression that it was less about the product, and more about the effect of massaging. Rubbing (anything) on your skin increases blood flow which is certainly known to help with hair growth, acne scarring etc. No idea about stretch marks but if you'd like to use it, you may as well.

Bibijayne · 20/07/2018 18:56

It's been tested in clinical studies and shown to make no difference to stretch marks :)

IncyWincyMouseRat · 20/07/2018 19:27

I’ve been shoving a bit of £4 baby moisturiser (Child’s Farm, it’s my go to for all skin complaints nowadays!) on my tummy since about 10 weeks. Still don’t have any stretch marks at almost 35 weeks but I think that’s largely luck and got nothing to do with the moisturiser! Nice to feel like you’re doing something though! I probably wouldn’t bother with anything expensive like bio oil. If you were keen on something oily I’d probably go for something like sweet almond oil which you could use for perineal massage later on as well and as a base for aromatherapy oils in labour if you wanted to.

Thewitchhadacat · 21/07/2018 05:39

I wouldn’t use bio oil because of the ingredients but I have and will use Mama Mio body oil and body butter from 12 weeks onwards. Didn’t get a single stretch mark in my first pregnancy even though I have loads from puberty. Remember to do from above your boobs to behind your knees. It’s not just your stomach that stretches.
