Running during pregnancy, anyone?

I've been running 3-5k on most mornings for the past year now. Into my 6th week of pregnancy now and can't stop running (though only 2k now).

Not sure if it's 100% safe to run throughout the pregnancy. I've had no morning sickness so far (so was I with the 2 previous pregnancies -- only I did not run at all then), so it is quite easy to get out of bed in the morning...

Desperately need all those runners' advice out there!!! Thank you!!!

My friend is a keen runner, she is now 13 weeks and still running loads. I think it’s fine as long as you don’t push yourself too hard and you maintain a comfortable pace (not so breathless that you can’t maintain a conversation) and keep well nourished and hydrated.

From one fellow runner to another! I am 6 weeks pregnant (found out on Saturday) with my first and the day I did my test and found out I'd done a 7miler earlier that day. Today I've done 5K, albeit slightly slower than I'd normally do but it's quite hot out.

If running is your thing, then keep doing it for as long as you feel comfortable, don't be aiming for any PBs by all means just stay hydrated and likelihood is we'll have to slow down at some stage anyway!

Most importantly listen to your body! I intend to run my usual 3/4 miles 3x a week for as long as I feel able to. I'm hoping keeping the fitness up will help with the marathon that is labour!! Xx

I was a keen runner, hitting pbs just before getting pregnant (5 to 10k kind of distances).
I stopped due to feeling rough initially.... but at 12 weeks I did a triathlon with no adverse effects, and 16 weeks did my first half marathon (mainly out of frustration at how I'd felt earlier).
I suffered a small amount of round ligament pain, got a belly belt, and had to build my knees back up (had underestimated the impact that stopping running, crossfit, cycling etc, plus ??relaxin effect had had. Knees fixed but have finally hung up my shoes as now (23weeks) get bladder pain when I wear the band and run!!!
Listen to your body, keep those joints cared for, have fun and keep reaping the benefits if you can!! Don't wrap yourself in cotton wool. Smile

Ps official advice is to continue as you have been Smile and that healthy happy mums have easier labours!

I kept running until 20 weeks when I found it too difficult. Was a member of a gym, so went to classes instead, which was good as instructor advised what was fine to do. Also ran a slow jog on the treadmill, which was easier than running outside

I’m a runner/triathlete. I planned to keep going all the way through (and even had a marathon place that I planned to keep - would have been 20ish weeks) but unfortunately due to hyperemesis was largely out of action until midway through my second trimester and by that point even a short run just made me need to wee constantly! I’m still training in the gym, riding a bike (albeit a very upright hybrid or my road bike on a turbo trainer!) and swimming at 34 weeks though.

I would have loved to keep running and I miss it desperately. I’ve already mentally booked a half Ironman for next year! Keep going for as long as you possibly can!

Listen to your body and you should be fine as long as you feel well enough. Usual advice about staying hydrated, not getting too hot or breathless etc. I'd also advise doing some antenatal Pilates and working on your pelvic floor exercises. Both running and pregnancy put a strain on your pelvic floor so it's worth really strengthening your core.

Thank you all for your replies and advice!!! will keep running as long as I feel well for it
