Hey everyone

I'm currently 20+2 and going baby shopping tomorrow, we haven't found out the sex yet but what sizes did you all buy?? I don't know whether to go just newborn or forget newborn and go to 0-3 or to get a bit of both??

When I had DD she was 7lb14 and 0-3 month drowned her so we had to stock up on newborn stuff. But it alao depends where you buy from. Next in particular is very generous size wise. H&M and gap more on the small side

Thetimehascometo · 15/07/2018 17:18

In my experience I wish I’d got more smaller sizes (we only bought a bit of newborn but mainly up to 1 month+) but that is only as we ended up having a premie and she is still not even close to newborn 7 weeks later! So we have been squabbling around looking for smaller sizes 🙊

Wellthisunexpected · 15/07/2018 17:19

I bought a couple of newborn then mainly 0-3, I come from a family of large babies.

Ended up sending DH to the local supermarket on his way to the hospital as it all drowned DS who was a tiny 6lb Shock

Havetothink · 15/07/2018 17:33

I've gone for up to 1 month and 0-3 months as my last barely fit newborn when she was born. If baby makes an early appearance I'll send my dh to the shop for smaller stuff bit as it is I don't want to waste money, better to buy big, doesn't matter if it's a bit loose. Maybe look at how you're measuring and have a guess, I always measured big.

Peanut91 · 15/07/2018 17:35

I have bought a mixture of newborn, up to 1 month and 0-3. As pp said sizes from different shops vary so much and some of the 0-3 stuff is as small as the newbown and others looks huge.

FoxAndBear · 15/07/2018 18:07

Shops sizes and babies vary massively obviously.
Also not sure why the sex of the baby matters unless you're planning to enforce gender stereotypes from the second they're born Hmm

coffeeforone · 15/07/2018 18:22

I only bought a couple of things in newborn size and had to send DH to the supermarket straight away as 1 month and 0-3 were far too big for the first month or so (DS was 6lb 13oz so smallish). I'm now 30 weeks with DS2 and have bought a good few packs of newborn this time - just cheap stuff including a couple of the 3 for £5 plain white sleepsuits from Sainsbury's so it's not a big waste if we have a bigger baby. Plenty of 1 month and 0-3 month too!

SamanthaH92 · 15/07/2018 18:27

I bought newborn for my first DD, turns out we needed tiny baby and had to go back out towards the end to buy them. Although i kept everything from DD1 so will use it for this next one but i bought a few new outfits the other week only to go to a scan at the hospital and be told shes already est 9lb so obvioisly new born isn't going to fit. I would wait till near the end personally.

outofnames · 15/07/2018 20:55

My dc have ranged from 8lb 7oz to 9lb 7oz so all big babies. They all wore newborn/up to 1 month clothes for the first 6 weeks or so.

Poptart4 · 15/07/2018 21:01

Personally i think newborn is a waste of money. Babies grow so fast you'd barely get any wear out of them.

0-3 might be a little big for a week or two but they'd soon grow into them and they would ladt alot longer.

Trixie101 · 15/07/2018 22:01

Thank you everyone for all your lovely messages, just don't have a clue what sizes to really go for so will probably aim for 0-3 more just panicking now I need to buy things😂...

As for the enforcing gender stereotypes comment... I find it hilarious how some people can't physically write a post without putting something digging at the end. I meant it as I'd be buying unisex items instead of the usual "pink" or "blue" if I was going to enforce "gender stereotypes" I think I would have found out the sex of my baby and I wouldn't be doing his/her nursery in lemon and grey 😂😂 keep your comments to yourself in the future...

I'm pregnant and can barely string a sentence together that really makes sense LOL!!! So maybe putting the "we haven't found the gender" was something I shouldn't have needed to put in... 😂😂

I've had two babies born at the same gestation (39+1). Ds was very skinny and all the 0-3 stuff I'd bought absolutely drowned him. My MiL had go and buy him some newborn and tiny baby stuff. The newborn bits did him until he was about 8-10 months old. Dd was a bit heavier and outgrew the newborn stuff by week 4.

Also it definitely depends on where you buy it from as there is no standard weight/length as far as I can tell. Dd came home from hospital in a gorgeous newborn M&S outfit...she got to wear it once.

Dinosauratemydaffodils · 15/07/2018 22:08

*8-10 weeks even, not months.

bumfloss · 15/07/2018 22:14

Dinosaur I was Shock at 8-10 months! Grin

smellmybacon · 15/07/2018 22:47

my 7lb9oz baby was in tiny baby clothes for nearly 3 weeks! everything else was huge

Hjkillas · 15/07/2018 23:28

I bought plenty of newborn, up to 1m and 0-3. Little man came out at 6lb15oz and needed lots of tiny baby stuff to see him through the next month.
I'd buy a few of each more the bigger stuff because they'll fit it eventually but keep some pennies by incase you have to go out and grab more of a certain size xx

Thetimehascometo · 16/07/2018 00:16

Oh the other thing we noticed is what's tiny baby/newborn in one shop is definitely not in another eg. Tiny baby in mothercare, M&S, Tesco and next is 5lb (all of which our 6lb baby is still wearing) whereas Debenhams and asda tiny baby is 7lbs (which drown our baby!

If you are likely to have a tiny baby and see any outfits then get them purchased. Or poor 6 week old has very few outfits! Lots of babygrows but only a handful of outfits, which in the current weather has been interesting!

merlotmummy14 · 16/07/2018 00:28

Was expecting a 10lb baby due to family history so we bought a few newborn clothing pieces and lots of 0-3 months. She came out at a very tiny 5lb 5oz and was in tiny baby clothes for the first month (grandparents had to pick up new wardrobe on way to hospital so she had something other than a blanket to wear) which looked huge on her to begin with. She is 15 weeks now and just starting to fit 0-3 month stuff. I recommend not taking the tag off anything you buying and keeping receipts so you can exchange for smaller/bigger sizes if need be.

Wellthisunexpected · 16/07/2018 09:31

@Poptart4 0-3 drowned my dinky DS, he'd wriggle himself into the middle of them, head and all. Not safe at all. Tiny baby fitted him for about 10 weeks, so definitely not a waste for us. 3-6 were the biggest waste, he seemed to skip that size.

Mousefunky · 16/07/2018 09:48

I had 10 lb babies so newborn never fit and I wished I hadn’t wasted my money with dc1 on newborn clothes, I had to give them all away. Granted, most people don’t have big babies Grin but I would still mostly buy 0-3 instead of lots of newborn.

EyeDrops · 16/07/2018 09:53

I'd also buy mostly 0-3 plus a few smaller bits just in case, then buy more if needed once they're born.
My DD was 9lb2 and had outgrown newborn sizes within a week!
