Gender scan being wrong

Mommabear101 · 15/07/2018 12:44

Hi everyone!

I’m thinking of finding out the sex of my baby but Im terrified it will be wrong for various reasons.

Are private gender scans quite accurate at 17 weeks?

Has anyone or anyone you know been told the wrong gender and later on been corrected? If so, please can I ask how far along you was and how long ago it happened?

Thanks in advance Smile

I had a scan at 16 weeks and it was clear what sex the baby was once she finally got into a position where the ‘bits’ were visible. This was done by an ob-gyn though as I’m going private during my pregnancy. I haven’t had my baby yet so I suppose you can never be 100% but it looked pretty obvious to me.

Will you be having your scan at 20 weeks? Just wondering if it’s worth paying for a private scan when you may not be confident of the result and the baby will be more developed in a few weeks at your 20 week scan to give you a result you may be more confident with.

I had one at 16 weeks was clear to see what it was before anything was even said and it got confirmed at the anomaly scan Smile

Hi there I'm 26 weeks pregnant. We payed for a private scan at 16 weeks +4 days and was told girl. Then had anomaly scan at 21+6 and it was very clearly a boy... they do get it wrong sometimes, we were quite shocked as we never bothered with gender scan for our other three but my husband couldn't make it to our anomaly scan due to work commitments.

Oh man wish I hadn't opened this thread! Blush considering getting a 16 week private one to tell, now I don't know whether to trust or not!!

JennaTools · 15/07/2018 13:35

We had a private scan at 16 weeks with our twins and they could tell right away, confirmed by the nhs 20 week scan and both were spot on for us.

honeysucklejasmine · 15/07/2018 13:36

20 week anomaly scan said girl. 36 week growth scan showed very much a boy. Summer '17

Mommabear101 · 15/07/2018 15:07

Thankyou all for your replies! @TruffleShuffles yes I will be going to the 20 week scan, now I’m debating wheather to get the private one done first or after to make doublely sure as I’m so impatient about it all now Shock

@Anm4 oh wow, I’m sure that was a strange position to be in but at least it was extremely clear the second time around. Can I please ask how long ago this was as I understand the machines they use get better with time, also I’m in the uk, we’re you too?

@honeysucklejasmine gosh 16 weeks thinking baby is a girl is a long time, did you buy girly bits In that time frame or did you have a feeling it was wrong at all? were you in the uk too? Sorry for all the questions!

@Mommabear101 hi yes this was during this pregnancy i am 26 + 5 weeks today, so ten weeks ago we had the private scan. We weren't particulary worried of babies sex we just wanted to know together, our other three came with us so it was a lovely experience for them to be able to get excited but was a bit weird trying to explain after the anomaly one that its actually a boy haha. I'm in the UK too x

YouCantBeSirius · 15/07/2018 15:18

I had a private sexing scan at 17 weeks that said girl. Was then told a girl again at my 20 week anomaly scan and again at my 36 week growth scan. I've not had the baby yet but all the sonographers were confident that this baby is a girl.

Anm4 · 15/07/2018 15:19

I also know plenty of people who have had gender scans that were correct so i think you just have to make that decision yourself and then just have it confirmed etc at the 20 week one. We had to return some girls bits but luckily they just exchanged for us & most stuff i had bought was neutral x

RuskBaby · 15/07/2018 15:20

A friend of mine had a private scan and told boy at 16 weeks, at 20 weeks it was a girl, born now but this was only last year and in the UK.

Mommabear101 · 15/07/2018 15:20

@sirmione16 I know it’s so confusing what to do isn’t it! With my first I didn’t want to find out but then I didn’t like just how unprepared I was, I’m trying to avoid that this time but I really don’t think I could handle it well if I got a shock in the delivery room Shock

Ok this was in the early 90s. My mother got told at her 20 week scan she was having a girl. My little brother lived in a pink nursery for 1st few months of his life. Only realised he was a boy at birth.

Stephisaur · 15/07/2018 15:56

Had mine at 17+5 yesterday.

If it’s not a boy then god knows what’s between the legs 😂

Here’s one of the photos looking up his bum :)

Filzma · 15/07/2018 16:04

The sonographer at 20 weeks confirmed the gender at 16 weeks. Said she was 90% sure it wouldn't change.

Have a scan coming up this week. If same, then can begin preparing.

@mommabear101

We already had a DD so only bought a few new bits. We were pretty upset when the mistake was realised. Not because we were upset about having a healthy boy, of course, but because we'd imagined who dd2 might be, how she and her sister might get on, what our life would be like with two girls. And suddenly she wasn't going to exist any more. So it took us a few days to reimagine all those scenarios with a little boy instead (and choose a new name!) Yes in UK.
