Too much movement?

Hi! I’m 39 weeks, not my first baby.

Today I’ve noticed lots more movement than normal. It hasn’t stopped since 5pm, and as it’s evening activity normally starts at 11pm for an hour I am a little alerted. Do you tend to concern yourself over more movement than usual? Thank you

I was always told that ANY change in movement should be checked out, both reduced and increased

I never heard that increased movement was a worry but I might be wrong.

My little man was breach, I had a week of extreme baby motions (!!!) And now he's all set to go in the right position when I was rechecked a week later!

I'm only 37 weeks though so not as far through as you. Maybe phone labour ward and just ask?

If you have a gentle walk about do they call down? Apparently the walking is like rocking so they generally go to sleep. Then you can observe the next period of movement see if it’s any different? If concerned though definitely give the triage a ring , you know yourself- if you’ve went to the work of posting this you are thinking it’s a bit abnormal

*calm down

Yes, increased movement can be a sign of distress, just like decreased movement.

It’s more than likely that everything is fine.

But go and get checked out for your own peace of mind.

I don't want to alarm you but a few years back when my cousin was a few days away from her due date with her first baby, she suddenly had lots of increased movements far more than was normal for her. She left it overnight as she thought her baby was just being more active and it was nothing to worry about. But after a night of little sleep she contacted her midwife who sent her to hospital to be monitored. After a very short time she was rushed to theatre as the baby's heart rate was very erratic. Her baby boy had the cord wrapped so tightly around his neck that it was affecting the blood flow to the placenta. He died two days later.
Please get checked now.

It’s not just reduced movements to look out for. Any change to your baby’s routine should be checked out. As people have said, it can be a sign of distress. It’s probably nothing but always worth being cautious!

Happened with my second child. For me it was a sigh of distress. She went crazy in her movements, erratic, kicking, moving non stop etc. Luckily I was already in hospital. Trolley was barely out of the room and I was being prepped for emcs. I hope you went to get checked and all is well.

Thank you all, I went along and was monitored. Some cord compression gave a funny reading on CTG but otherwise all was well.
