Ongoing infection but it isn't thrush - should I worry?

Hi ladies, can anyone advise me or have you been through this? I'm 25 (nearly 26) weeks with my first baby and had an infection for the last 3 weeks. Discharge is milky yellow (was very yellow first 2 days). Went to see GP 3 weeks ago, dr prescribed Caneston cream. No change a week later so prescribed the pesary version, still no change this week so prescribed the cream with a steriod as also very sore down there and inside. The dr took a swab and the results came back today but there was no sign of a yeast infection, BV, trich etc. I've got another GP appointment on Monday morning but I'm really worried something is wrong as I'm feeling incresingly sore and worried could be affecting little one.

Is the only symptom ‘milky yellow discharge’?

sjm2018 · 13/07/2018 19:04

Hi, thanks yes that and being very sore. Thankfully haven't had any bleeding or other discharge. Was worried a few weeks ago because baby's movements seemed to decrease then stop for 3 days, but midwife checked heartbeat and gave baby a (gentle) prod and they've been more active since then. Thanks.

Sore internally or externally? Sore in what way? Could it be because it’s such hot weather and everything down there swells (it’s so glamorous isn’t it!)? There’s also the risk of varicose veins in the labia.

The discharge alone doesn’t really indicate infection and the tests seems to have ruled them out as well. The discharge sounds relatively normal, and I wonder if your discomfort is down something else.

Hi JustVent, thanks. It's very sore internally (can feel it without touching and applying the cream etc really hurt) and quite sore outside. The dr had a look and said there was an infection, think it's swollen too.

I hadn't thought of varicose veins!! I'm learning all the time Smile. I've scoured the internet and every site seems to say that yellow colouring should be checked - is it more normal than it sounds? It has been hot but I've been wearing loose clothes, cotton undies etc and live in Scotland so it hasn't been as bad...

Thanks for your help x

No worries.
Wow that is a conundrum then it certainly sounds symptomatic of an infection.

What’s the next step?

Would a repeat test be worth it? Have you considered treating yourself for BV just in case? You can buy the stuff in chemists and supermarkets.

Go to GUM my lovely they can look under the microscope there and then, swabs are ok but you'll never pick up a Trich on a dry Swab (mega unlikely as pretty rare) but under the scope they can see loads of stuff that a Swab won't it might just be typical discharge in pregnancy but you shouldn't have pain or soreness, nothing worse especially if pregnant and in the heat! Bless you nothing worse than sore bits xx

Thank you both! Going back to GP in the morning but if she can't help I'll head over to the GUM clinic. Just really worried something might be missed that could affect little one, and you're right, it's not nice being so sore all the time. Hope all's well with you and thanks again for your advice xx
