Lifting in pregnancy

Hi all, I just wanted some advice on lifting during pregnancy. Obviousley I know heavy lifting is a big no no, but I have a puppy who I pick up regularly to move when he is being lazy, and like to clean my car and carry a Hoover etc when doing so. Is this too much should I be slowing down? People keep saying i shouldn't be lifting anything but i struggle as i am rather independent. Also, is the risk to the baby or to your muscles? Thank you 😊😊xx

How do you think people with more than one child manage if you reckon carrying a puppy and a hoover is too heavy?!

Thank you! I felt as though I was being too relaxed as I hadn't even thought about it until people had started commenting🙈xx

Risk is to damaging your softening ligaments. The baby is not at risk.

I can’t imagine normal day to day activities are an issue. Unless you are lifting your car up to clean underneath it I am not sure what you would be lifting that was very heavy.

The risk is to you, as ligaments are more liable to stretch and everything is loosened. Do what you feel you can just be sensible about it. I have a toddler and some heavy lifting is unavoidable, that said if you pull something remember you're limited on the painkiller front. You'll know as you get bigger when you're doing too much.

Thank you all so much..I appreciate all the advice xx

You can lift anything you like as long as it's within your regular strength and you use good technique. The only risk is that if you have bad technique you're more liable to injure yourself. Plenty of women weightlift through pregnancy. I was hucking 16kg of toddler and lifting 10kg weights above my head to the end of my second pregnancy. I used to roll my eyes until they nearly fell out when colleagues would panic on seeing me lifting anything heavier than a coffee cup.

Puppies tend not to kick as hard as toddlers - I'm lifting my angry 3yo out of situations she should not be in all the time.

I agree with everyone else.
Heavy lifting can cause more damage to the pregnant mother then the baby. Unless ofcorse your lifting a sofa on your own. They say that whatever your body is used to lifting on a daily basis (basic tasks etc) that’s what you can carry on doing.
I lift a lot of equipment for work as a mobile nail tenchician and it does frighten me but I take it easy, bend my knees correctly and my body has been lifting it for the last 5 years so I’m sure my muscles are equipt to cope with it x x

I am 15 weeks and still circuit training, which includes weights. Drs have said it is fine
